Did any of you ever do the Columbia House thing? I sure did. The regular price purchase obligated purchases were still a buck cheaper than the local record store, so I didn't mind getting 12 free records for buying 6 at regular price.
To help make this relevant, I'm sure I purchased at least one Joe Walsh and one Quiet Riot record from these guys.
Interesting that Columbia House just made their own copies of albums, then sent the record labels a percentage of the standard royalty rate, figuring it was too much effort to sue them, and cashing the check was acceptance of the non-negotiated royalty percentage. What a nutty business model.
I may be brain farting here but back in the day wasn't it around 12 records for the initial shipment and for a few extra cents they threw in one more??

Uh, but with 8-tracks.
Cassettes didn't come around until later. By then, I was already driving and bought them at the record store. Cactus Records and Tapes, if I remember.
Funny thing about 8-tracks is when you hear a song years later, you still remember where it paused to switch tracks and repeat a few second. Good times indeed.
I stayed away from Columbia House for quite a while. My dad signed up with them, and ended up hating it (you had to decline the monthly selection, or it was automatically sent to you), so I considered it a warning. Later on, I signed up with another outfit that was modeled after Columbia House. Got a real nice start on my CD collection.
