WTF: UNACCEPTABLE: smurfco calls "bull spit" on the song by Elton John and Bernie that is called by the name of "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues"

smurfco

This song was playing in the lobby of my office this morning and it got me thinking... there's a glaring omission here... so I wanted to make sure I wasn't wrong and I've been reading the lyrics over and over for a good twenty minutes now.

There is nothing in here that explains why they call it "the blues". So you're sad because you're alone, time on your hands could be time spent with this other person, that I get. But none of that explains why they call it the blues. Is it because when you're that lonely all the sudden you just want to put on a bunch of denim? You feel like a Smurf or something?

This is outragus. The listener goes through the entire song with the expectation that they will learn why they call it "the blues", and that expectation is never met. Why DO they call it "the blues" Elton? Bernie? Do you even FUCKING know? I'm so angry about this that I've been spinning around on my eyebrows and spitting wooden nickels. It's been hard to keep my hands from shaking enough just to write this thread.

First, I don't think that's a Bernie song, working off the top of my head. Secondly, Tommy Davidson (of Living Color game) had a bit about this in his stand up in about 88.

I assumed he had a bad case of the blue balls.

Why is Saturday night alright for fighting? Who saved his life that night? And from what? I still don't know what crocodile rock is.

Fuck artistic license! Lol

Tell me motherfucker why do they call it the blues?!?!?!!

Maybe the underlying point of it all was to make you feel down about not understanding the lyrics. But instead of giving you the blues it gave you some punk like anxiety.
You did it all wrong dammit!

......all the sudden you just want to put on a bunch of denim?

Lots of Bernie Taupin’s lyrics are free association nonsense. He often deals in abstract surrealism. Read some of the lyrics to “Daniel.” Yet, he’s had a long and successful career writing lyrics.

The lesson to be learned is, if you’re stuck on a line, make something up, even if the logic is absent. It will make people wonder.

Time on my hands, could be time writing nonsense with you....
