Thursday night gig report!

Dew Knot Humps

Useless without serious drugs
Played a show last night opening for a couple of touring doom metal bands Goya and Bronco. Last night was the first night of a three month tour run for these guys. Cool bands and cool dudes too.

Venue: Reggie’s in Chicago’s beautiful South Loop. I always enjoy playing this joint, the sound on stage is phenomenal, real warm and clear sounding.

Crowd: Sparse. The hope when you play with touring bands is that their fans will pack the joint and if you kick their asses they might become fans of your band. That didn’t really happen but the people that were there were into it and had nice things to say.

The set: streamlined 6 songs- thirty minutes.

Gear: Epiphone BJ Armstrong LP junior, Danelectro Baritone, Boss tuner, Boss GE7, EHX Memory Boy, Orange Dual Terror and a 1x12” cab loaded with a WGS Vetran thirty.

Clothes: Black T shirt, black Wrangler's, black Justin cowboy boots.

Pay: $60 for the band

Stimulants: A mug of Chai Masala tea on the way, a Shirley Temple at the club and outside weed puffing

Synopsis: Fun night overall, the band sounded pretty good, the vibe in the room was happening and as an added bonus there was an industrial fan setup on my side of the stage which was not only cooling but it made me look like I was in a Whitesnake video the whole show.

Here’s a Fans Only video of the set. Check out my flowing locks blowing in the wind.

$60 for the whole band! Did that even cover fuel costs for everyone? Between you guys, you should be packing the place with friends and family.

I had people show for our gigs in Denver when I used to play out and we were terrible. But, we knew a lot of people at the time that were willing to come out to support us in our fantasy.

My brother organized an afternoon gig in Denver with his band and another band he knows. Friends and family of both bands showed and the place was packed.

The band that played the bar, after my brother's band at night, was a trans man, computer and occasional drummer. He was a great singer. Something about a woman with a voice who has transitioned to male with hormones made for a unique blend. The place was packed with trans people that night.

Part of the deal if you want to play original music is you usually are not doing for the money. It took me a half hour in my Crown Vic to get to the club 8 miles away so maybe no on the fuel costs. The other factor last night was the $20 ticket.

I get it now.

Is Black Sabbath an influence? That's something I think I hear.
