Quitting smoking sucks.

I just leaned learned some things that blew my mind. Nicotine is very addictive, but it’s NOT one of the ingredients in cigarettes that causes cancer. 80% of doctors incorrectly believe that nicotine cases cancer. There are multiple ingredients in cigarettes that are carcinogenic, but nicotine is not one of them. Tar in cigarettes causes cancer.

The fact that nicotine is very addictive gives me pause. It’s a stimulant. It constricts blood vessels. It raises heart rate. It raises blood pressure. It can delay sleep. It reduces deep sleep.

The boost nicotine creates tends to fade with regular use. Then, the same dose is needed to simply feel normal. The tolerance effect means that a higher dose is needed to get the boost.

Dentists have noticed that patients who use nicotine pouches in their mouths experience gums receding and tissue damage. Yet, some researchers are starting to think nicotine may actually have some benefits as medicine.

Vaping is a whole other can of worms. The vaping process causes byproducts like benzene, formaldehyde, nickel, chromium, and lead into the lungs and body.

For those who have become addicted, it seems like nicotine patches, or gum, may be the best alternatives to smoking, vaping, pouches, or chewing. At least, they are not likely to cause cancer like tar does.

I plan to stay away from nicotine. As much as I sometimes feel a need for a boost, I don’t want the addiction and the downsides that come with it. But, I was surprised to find out that cancer is not one of them.

Some of the big tech startups actually encourage employees to use Zyn pouches and work more. Palantir has vending machines in the offices that give out free Zyn packs. People willing to work for Peter Thiel are fucking nuts.

One of my country cousins had oral skin graft surgery in his 30's due to dipping Copenhagen.

My grandfather had emphysema from cigars and pipes (never cigarettes). He lived about 10 years beyond the doctor's prognosis, driving with an oxygen bottle in the back seat of his car.
