Anyone use flat-wounds on a solidbody?

I did for a while on my '79 The Paul. It's a sound. I used it more for '50's style blues and jazz. I know a lot of the "West Coast" blues guys here in SoCal do it.

Currently have them on my telecaster. Ry Cooder has apparently uses them on the guitars where he’s not playing slide.

(I am, more and more, a single coil believer)

I've used flats on my ESP EC1000 back when I had it. I was doing what Mark described. I liked the sound.

Flatwound 12's on my SG for the past 2 years or so. I tuned it to C# a few weeks ago, it was in E before that.

Had 13's and 11's on it in the past (in E).

Put flats on my 57-RI Strat because I thought it would get me a vintage Buddy Holly kind of tone, but it didn't really, and I hated how dead they sounded. Took them off pretty quickly. I don't recall the brand of strings -- probably Gibson nickel flats. I really should have done more research into what I wanted instead of thinking the strings were some kind of magic ingredient.

On the other hand, I used to have a solid-body 12-string Vox, and Pyramid flatwounds sounded great on it. Kept the same strings on there for years.

I’m really only just now experimenting with it, but I’m currently using D’Addario Chromes, with 10s. Relatively inexpensive (plus flatwounds survive longer) and sound fine.

I’ve used Chromes on various T-type guitars here and there to get a vintage Brit Invasion sound. I like how thuddy and dead they sound for chunking away on cleanish chord parts.

And I’ve used Pyramid flats on 12-strings for the whole 60s thing in the past and they sound great. I’ve been meaning to change out my Reverend for flats but haven’t bothered and I’ve been pleased with how it plays so I’ve not wanted to mess with anything.

And of course flats sound great on bass and are my preference there.
