Princess Ariel is a fictional character, a mermaid, and the protagonist of Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989 film). She later appears in the film's prequel television series, direct-to-video sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea and direct-to-video prequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning. Ariel is voiced by Jodi Benson in all the above animated material. The character is based on the protagonist of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" story, but was developed into a different personality for the 1989 animated film adaptation. Her distinct appearance consists of long, flowing red hair, blue eyes, a green tail and a purple seashell bikini top. She is the only Disney Princess to have red hair. Ariel is one of the meetable face characters at the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

She's no Princess Jasmine.

Jasmine never had any moments like this one.

Howard Ashman was a hell of a lyricist. Consider the rhyme schemes in that song. You'd have to look to guys like Sondheim, Elvis Costello, etc., for comparison, in terms of sophistication.

That was one memorable song/movie moment. It makes the audience fall in love with Ariel. I know that because I saw Little Mermaid in the theaters when it came out and I was blown away by that scene.

It's certainly one of the very first movies I have a vivid memory of seeing in a theatre. One of the very first shots of the movie, where the "camera" tilts underwater, and you get all these detailed moving shadows on the ocean floor... in hindsight completely revolutionary... I can remember feeling like I was seeing something done that I'd never seen before.

(this made me think really hard about the other movies I have early memories of seeing in a theatre... another one was Prancer, which, oddly enough, was released in the very same week as The Little Mermaid... I'd imagine I'd seen movies in the theatre before that, knowing Mom, and I certainly saw lots at home, but there you have it... I was 4 years old plus two months in both instances. I don't know whether it's just that it's been reinforced by having rewatched the movie many times... but I can really remember a lot about the first time watching The Little Mermaid, and I couldn't tell you the first thing about Prancer except that it's about a child and reindeer.)

I am a red head - I don't like red heads. They all look like Alfred E. Numan when they are kids. I looked like Alfred E. Numan when I was a kid. Now I look like a drunk HeatMizer.

You and Mrs. P need kids, then you will see those shows.

YOU TAKE THAT BACK.

We watch plenty of kids shows.

The Little Mermaid came out when I was a freshman in high school. I was too old to want to see it for myself, didn't have a girlfriend to make me see it with her, and too young to appreciate it for anything other than a kid's movie. :embarrassed:
