boost/preamp/eq

Pine Apple Slim

Armchair Expert
Im looking for a "more" pedal. Something to leave on all the time as a clean tone enhancer/to edge of breakup/tones shaper.
Something low gain that brings out harmonics/sweetens/boosts and that I can use the eq to tweak between rigs.
Something similar to my EP Booster but with a tiny bit of pedal hair on tap and a good eq section.

Ive looked around at the BB preamp, RC booster, Walrus Voyager, EQD Tone Job, & JHS Clover & Crayon.

I've also considered going big box preamp with something like the Benson, Hudson Broadcast, or JHS Color Box, but I dont wanna spend that much or give up that much real estate, and I dont really need the approaching fuzz overloaded mixing board thing, although it is kinda cool.

I consider my DOD250 more of a touch sensitive distortion than a true pre amp. Same for the EQD Special Cranker.

Ive tried a couple of Timmy clones and like them better as a mid gain OD than for what Im talking about.
Not really a fan of Blues Breakers, they sound thin and too transparent and trebly to me, like no beef to em.

Im tempted to get an RC Booster as seems to be the favored Nashville Cat preamp, but the BB Preamp is also very popular and Im not really sure how they differ.
Plus for around the same money theres all these other options form the "boutique" guys like EQD, JHS, and Walrus.

What's your fav preamp pedal? Or fav "leave it on" pedal with a great eq section?

For an EQ you could get an MXR Kerry King ten band EQ. It’s out of production but you can get one on Reverb.

Slim - The RC (Real Clean) is a clean boost and BB more like a Marshall boost with different tone shaping. I have both and at one time 3 RC's. Sold 2 of them to reduce the herd. I also have the AC (Almost Clean) which is to me right in between. I have used it a drive but very different from the Tumnus (I bought from you) as well as an EP. I also have the AC plus which has an added boost function (switchable) so it is like having 2 pedals in a box and there are two footswitches.

Thanks Saint. I went ahead and ordered the classic white RC. I have a bunch of low gain pedals that Ive tried but Im looking more for something clean but with a bit of depth and color and eq shaping. It came yesterday but I havnt tried it yet. Will report if it does what I think it will do, ie, work as a clean "more" pedal, and as a boost into a low to mid gain drive.

I think you'll be happy with the classic RC. I still use that white pedal on one of my boards. I use mine as a clean boost and EQ adjust. But, it can do a bit of hair if you want. Also, it can be used to push an amp at the edge of breakup into overdrive. And, it can push an overdriven amp into more dirt territory.

I took er for a spin this morning. Its a quality pedal that works exactly as advertised.
I really liked what it does into the Browne Protein, which I never really bonded with. The Protein is real quality pedal but its just a little too..idk, tame. But the RC fattens up the ODR1 side to something closer to an actual ODR1, and it makes the Blues Breaker side way more tolerable to to my ear, rounder and not as shrill. It also plays very well boosting the Karma Mostortion, which also pairs very well with the Protein. Lot of shades of cleans to low to mid gain with these. Think these three pedals are gonna stay on the board for a good long while.
