Dealership Totals Customer's Camaro ZL1, Owner And Dealer At War

When I was working as a service writer for an independent Goodyear dealer back in '91, we had a district manager who was a complete spaz. Every friday, he would drive to each of the 14 stores in the chain to deliver paychecks in his lifted Toyota 4x4. He was always in a mad hurry, and he would usually come flying into the parking lot like he was on fire, swing into an empty parking spot or service bay, jump out of his truck, run into the lobby and throw the stack of checks on the counter before running out the door, hopping back into his truck and taking off like a man possessed.

The owner of the chain was one of the greediest, shady, disagreeable sonsabitches I have ever met... even to this day. He made Ebenezer Scrooge look like Mother Theresa.

Anyway, on one such Friday a customer brought in his 1 month old Corvette ZR1 for a Mobil One synthetic oil change. Mike (the spaz DM) had just arrived and pulled into one of the bays when the car was finished. The technician backed the vette out of the shop and parked it in the lot, just behind the bay that the DM was parked in.

So, while I was taking the guys money for his oil change, the DM jumped in his truck and flew out of the bay...

BANG!

He crushed that poor ZR1 like it was a kids toy. That fiberglass body was no match for the SmittyBuilt rear bumper. The damage was shocking. Customer heard it, flinched, but didn't turn to look. The look on my own face as I stared out the window in awe was all he needed... "was that my car?" He asked.

"Uhh yeah, yes it was."

"Shit".

You know, as greedy, shady and dickish as the owner was, he was at the store in 30 minutes. The car was clearly totalled. The customer was pretty clear about wanting the car replaced, which it was, with no argument or reservation. In fact, the store owner had another new ZR1, same color and everything tracked down and delivered to the Chevy dealer down the street within 2 days.

That dealership needs to learn the difference between minimum legal liability and doing right by the customer. The fact that it took GM and a different dealer from 1,000 miles away getting involved is pretty disgusting.

Yup, only when the negative publicity reached a point that the dealership's owners saw their bottom line in jeopardy did they come up with something besides a beat up second-hand Camaro with thrashed tires, higher miles, aftermarket tinted glass and AutoZone badges.

Car dealerships are wretched hives of scum and villainy. A typical car lot employee is an addict with priors. Even most of the managers have done more partying than Kenny Powers. It's literally their job to cheat people out of money, so low morals is considered an asset. Expecting a dealership to do the right thing is laughable.

There was a car lot in Colorado that made the papers for roughing up customers. They were sometimes taking customers out back and beating them. The local police started receiving complaints and it became apparent that there was a pattern of behavior. Perhaps, it was run by a mafia.

Man... I live in NJ and have deceased members of my family (natural causes, actually) that were in the mafia and even I've never heard of that. Dealers out here are usually run by the scum of the earth but the lower level employees are about half good guys and half dickbags, but not THAT bad.

Sociopaths are often charming and charismatic. Lots of people seem like good guys on the surface. You may never know how dark and sinister some 'nice guys' truly are down deep. But, yes, there are some car lots that create a better culture. For example, Saturn dealerships were known for going against the typical car lot culture.

I do typically buy at once particular dealer (All American Ford in Paramus, NJ) because they've always taken good care of us, even after the sale. I've gotten two cars there and my brother's gotten... Five?

About the old owners? I know AA expanded from their Hackensack location. We mostly dealt with Steve for sales and Ryan in service, until he moved to Ohio or something like that.

We recently had to bring in our '11 Edge because the Sync APIM problem cropped up. They got the part (which has to be pre-programmed by Ford) quick and installed it, which requires removing most of the dash, in a day. We have the extended warranty (bought it when our initial 2-year lease was up) so we didn't have to spend a dime.

One of the sales guys, Shimone, has a SICK Shelby SuperSnake.

New York...near Poughkeepsie...

I see dealerships from the opposite viewpoint customers do...yes,some are horrible criminals but some, like mine, are just trying to do right by people...some of whom can never be satisfied...
