IIRC he's been in recovery for decades and has actually been recognized for his efforts to help other musicians overcome addiction.

He is, to the best of my knowledge, in recovery, but past abuse can have major effects long after a person stops the abuse. My brother was sober 20 years but died as a result of damage done to his heart during his drinking days. That was why I commented on that; he seems to have done well despite the past.
