Grace Bowers?

Knox in Box

Rustbelt refugee.
Anyone else follow her? I've seen no mention on her, but feel you need to get on ball. Yes, she's seventeen, and seeming very much the real deal.

This got posted yesterday.

I don't follow her, but some of her clips have popped up for me. I find it encouraging for the future that young folks like her are embracing the guitar and the music that goes with it. So if she can bring more folks to the fold, then good for her.

So far she strikes me as a great guitar player that has yet to have anything unique to say.

To be clear that's not the measure of anything, but without a distinct voice of some sort I find myself uncompelled to keep listening. It's like all those folks that tried to JH, EVH, SRV, etc. The latest seems to be Derek Trucks among slide players, even conventional players are trying to go for that feel and vibe...some adapting technique to emulate slide.

The silver lining might be an advancing of technique, but I'd rather just listen to really good to awesome songs. Fitting a great solo within that is far more interesting to me than music as vehicle for flexing a musician technique muscle.

The thing is that's she's 17(?), so she's really all future. That raises the question as to whether she'll be like Trucks or more like Shepherd...the latter being "easier". I do worry that's she's getting extra attention because she's a blonde girl. Age isn't the hurdle folks used to think it was. Once interest clicks, it's far easier for kids to advance quickly given the ever expanding abundance of freely available instructional material one can access on YouTube. Add that to the aforementioned interest and the similarly endless amount of free time kids have...facility isn't that hard. Neither is mimicking feel/feigning expression.

Once I hear some good songs, I'm likely in. That, however, hasn't happened yet.

She has some otherworldly chops and sound. She also has a look which could help her go far. I was actually more interested in what the second guitarist was doing in the first video. That was some killer funk playing and tone.

Other potential upside is that she may inspire more young folks, particularly girls, to want to play...helping to keep guitar "relevant".

Just listened for the first time, and the band is tight and the song grooves, but the solo didn't really lift the tune. Solid playing, but the solo section was more showcase-y and less a natural sounding/feeling part of the tune. She's def doing some of that Derek Trucks emulation I mentioned previously, again, like LOTS of other players these days. The other players solo parts felt like they hit the vibe of overall tune better as well.

Again, she's still super young and has the potential to actually improve (as a musician) if she chooses.

Watching this, the impression that I get is of someone that knows the instrument and is making music in the moment.
That’s amazing for someone so young.
It doesn’t feel overly rehearsed. It doesn’t feel forced or rote regurgitation.
It feels natural. Experienced.

The move early on in the video to nod in the band - she’s in charge and knows how to direct.
I mean even if she just learned how to tell the band, “I’m ready to go.” that’s a legit skill. And to do it naturally and seemingly respectfully but still fully in charge is impressive.

Grace is a cool prodigy. As good as she is now she’ll be amazing in ten years. Yesterday she posted to r/guitar showing off the two Murphy Lab SGs Gibson gave her.
