Nashville Band Charts....

Any tricks to learning these?

I have my audition with my church (finally) this Sunday and they use Nashville charts and our auditions are off of hand written charts (they could have at least typed them up). Three songs - two of which I have not heard before.

I've never used the Nashville system before so in addition to learning the songs I need to learn the system. Though I generally just memorize the songs anyways, that will not always be the case.

As I understand them, they are very similar to the roman numeric system (I-IV-V-vi etc) except that you are assumed to know which numbers are major/minor/dim. Then you just plug the formula into the specific key, and each chord is a measure unless noted.

so in C, 3 would be Em, 5 would be Gmaj, etc...

If you know your Circle of Fifths you will be fine as it's the same thing. It follows the principle that the i-IV and V chords of each key are major, the ii,iii and vi Chords are are Minor and the 7th is diminished.
If you are playing in C and the band leader says 'go to the sixth" then the next chord will be Aminor.

I know the circle of Fifths - it has just been awhile since I have used it- and remembering which chords are raised or lowered in each key. So when the band leader says 'go to the 6th' I have to count it out in my head with now (C-Dm-Em-F-G-Am....ok....Am). What throws me off since I have not used it is awhile is when we are playing in a minor key and I have to remember the changes to the numbers. Luckily all the songs we are doing are in major keys - and pretty easy.

I just dislike auditions. Plus this church has a fair number of nationally published songwriters and puts out their own CDs. So the bar is high for musicians. I'll just have to make sure I rehearse the material thoroughly.

I knows all about the circle of fifths!

oh, man...151. we went through a 151 phase when I was a younger, more impressionable young man hanging around with like-minded peers. one could put on a serious drunk with that, very quickly.

I remember when I was 18 and at the University of Wisconsin and learning how to drink irresponsibly I did a "challenge" at a local Madison tavern consisting of ten shots of 151 and five beers. Funny, since those student days, I've rarely had more than one drink at a time...
