RIP Ali Ahmed Aslam, inventor of chicken tikka masala

The creator of the second most popular anglo-Indian dish has passed away.

“A chef who is believed to have invented the chicken tikka masala, regarded as Britain’s favourite curry, has died aged 77.

Ali Ahmed Aslam’s death on Monday was announced by his Shish Mahal restaurant in Glasgow, which closed for 48 hours as a mark of respect. The eatery announced: “Hey, Shish Snobs … Mr Ali passed away this morning … We are all absolutely devastated and heartbroken.”

His funeral was held at Glasgow Central Mosque on Tuesday. Members of the public were invited to attend.”

I would remember him over a bottle of Kingfisher but I have covid and my husband is too busy to go out.

I've never actually made it there but I'm planning on being up that end of town for a tattoo at the end of January so I'll make a point of going.

For a relatively small city, we've got a ridiculous amount of world beating Indian places.

I never knew the dish was invented by someone. Thought it was more like a traditional recipe with no known origin as such.

Bummer. Some of the best chicken tikka masala I had was in London somewhere. Good stuff. We'll see how real Indian food measures up in about 6 weeks when I go to Mumbai.

Go to a Jain restaurant. I don’t remember the name of the place I went to but the food was unreal. But plan to spend some time in the hotel because it was rich AF and sat like concrete in my stomach.

Going with a friend who grew up in Mumbai and staying with her family. They are vegetarian, so I will be eating my share of veggie food when I'm there. However when we are out exploring Mumbai, I can eat whatever. There is a restaurant that I saw in a video that has tandoori fish that looks amazing. They also have a tandoori chicken biryani that looks great. We plan on stopping there a couple of times while we are out. Her parents also want to take us to an upscale vegetarian place that looks great.
