Signature Guitars?

Ok Mark made the comment that playing a signature guitar is like playing dress up. Do you agree? I have two signature guitars. Not by anyone most people would know, but I dig the features that aren't available elsewhere. While I would be caught dead with an SRV, Frankencaster or something of that nature, I like the Clapton strat due the unique electronics and versatility. Most people don't even realize those are sigs. What say you?

I don't like 'em generally...but your Hinson is badass and I like the Ron Ashton v as well. And todd van luewens (butchering the name I'm sure) yamaha with the 3 p-90s...

Whatever... Sig or not, that Hinson is bitchin... That said, my signature ends up all over my guitars as I naturally relic them...
 
There are some I really dig, like my Asheton and the Hinson. I like the Stef Carpenter baritones a lot too. But I definitely feel their is a Signature Strat/LP overload.
 
I don't really care if there isn't anything specifically cosmetic about the instrument. the first edition Eric Johnson strat is a great example because I think it's a great guitar and other than the neckplate there really isn't anything to distinguish it as being a sig instrument. The SRV strat is another one I don't want to play on stage with the big SRV on the pick guard.

you can change the pickguard.
 
and just to post something relevant to the thread, i had a Blues Saraceno Samick TV-20 in college. i brought it to a store in buffalo that i thought was reputable for a setup and the moron used electrical tape to shim the neck. it ended up twisting and had to get rid of it. but it was a great guitar with a fat neck and 3 humbuckers (2 hotrails and a JB, all Duncan Designed).

Was it one of the plaid ones?
 
I have a Les Paul signature Gibson. :grin:

The only ones I wouldn't want are the ones that are TOO recognizeable. A Frankenstein or SRV maybe.
Otherwise, I'd look at em if they had the features I wanted.

i dunno how you get more recognizable than a Les Paul.
 
I don't really care if it is a signature or not. If the guitar has the features I like or need, I will go for it. I think the only thing I think is silly, is if you go buy a signature guitar thinking it will make you sound like that guitar player. Honestly, I don't think I have ever picked up a signature guitar (other than a Les Paul which in my book doesn't count, hey maybe they should make a signature Les Paul Les Paul)

And the pickups that I don't like, and the gold hardware and the left handed bridge. It has a ton of really specific features that I don't care for. Thats my biggest issue with signature guitars I guess, and the cosmetic thing is part of it....it was built to one persons requirements and some of the sig instruments have so many REALLY specific features that I don't care for.

But les Pauls are also associated with a ton of other players. If you asked 100 in a bar you'd probably hear more "Slash" and "Jimmy Page" than Les Paul.

well that's fine but some people do like those features and are ok with changing the pickguard. we don't have to like everything.
