The Official MWGL forums cooking club???

jbj

Poor old Geordie's array...
I'm a bit inebriated so this might be a stupid idea but an idea it is. Apart from Mrs JBJ (who likes to cook but isn't too fussed about digging deeper than cooking recipes she likes) and a pal in work (who's more into baking) that I share recipes and ideas with, no one I know cooks which sucks.

Would anyone be up for a cooking club?

Every week, fortnight or month depending on what people were up for we would have a recipe / ingredient / theme / cuisine for us to all try then we could share photos, our thoughts, any suggestions for tweaks etc..

I'd certainly watch and comment, and participate when it fit my partner's dietary needs, my child's pickiness, and my weird food ethical code.

I'd like to get in line for a suggestion. Cannellini beans or, black beans. I wanted to make chilli, went to the pantry cabinets, where our canned goods are to see if we had kidney beans, hominy and chicken broth. 90% of it was cannellini beans or, black beans. I made a dent in it, going through everything, checking expiration dates. Over two trash days, got rid of those but, still, cans on top of cans.

Decided maybe I can just use them up. Tried a black bean casserole recipe that looked like it would be good. It wasn't.

Could start things nice and wide ranging - cannelloni and / or black beans is the theme ingredient, anything goes recipe wise.

What says the brain trust?

I rarely use either of them so I'm definitely game for trying a dish or two.

Edit: oops, attached two thumbs I meant for something else BUT @Chicken Man one is curries haggis bon bons out of a packet with cheap white toast, the other is a microwave curry that I jazzed up a bit to look nice and it looks a lot better than it tasted I must say! Doesn't have to be fancy super bougie played but we demand pictures

If you don't use those on the regular, how'd you wind up with so many cans?

Edit: now that I have a keyboard to type on

Cannellini beans.
This is a dish that an old school eye-talian fellow used to make for his guys at a paper recycling plant I did some work at. It's super easy and tastes great w/ some fresh crusty bread.

Cook some penne or rigatoni; you will pull it from the heat just before it gets al dente
While the pasta is cooking, saute some rough chopped onion & finely minced garlic in olive oil. Toss in some leafy green towards the end; spinach, kale, basil, whatever you like.
Mash up one can of beans w/ the liquid from the can
Drain the pasta but reserve the water
Combine the mashed beans, another can of drained beans, pasta & the sauteed veg in your pasta pot
Add back the pasta water till you get your desired consistency
Season as you like

I'd be in for this. May need to exchange numbers with someone that can text me and say "Hey dumbass, don't forget to cook tonight"

I love cooking and do most of it at home. My wife is on a diet right now so that drives our food choices for the time being (Mediterranean Diet).

When the pandemic started, son came home for spring break and never left, "online learning". Last spring he graduated, got an internship and stayed here till end of summer when he became a full hire. He's a great cook and does "fancy stuff". Wife and I are less adventurous. Why they bought that many cans of beans is beyond me.

I think you have his next birthday present, ready to wrap.

My wife like pickled beets and pickled asparagus enough to buy them every time she goes shopping (maybe twice a year) but not enough to actually eat them.

I'll have time to experiment next week if we want to do an ingredient challenge or something like that. I'll eat almost anything except beets.
