Thinking about getting into bass, amp or connection questions

Hey, all

As you may have seen in another thread, I'm thinking of buying a short-scale bass from the profits from selling a bunch of pedals on Reverb.

I don't have a bass amp, however. Right now, I have enough money to buy a decent bass, but not a lot left over for an amp.

Most of the bass playing would probably be done connected to my computer, through Rocksmith, so that's not an issue.

I also have a powered speaker that's connected to a cheap Behringer mixer, which accepts both XLR and 1/4 inch cables.

So do I just run the bass direct into the mixer? Would it sound better with a bass preamp? Should I just buy a cheap bass amp?

Thanks

Grant

If this is just for playing at home, bass into the mixer and out to the powered speaker will probably sound just fine. You could add a Tech 21 VT Bass DI if your budget allows. If you're patient, you should be able to get one for about $120.

There’s a deruggedised Behringer clone, the BDI21. Costs 30€ or so here, and it will probably stand up to the rigours of home use. I love mine, I used to use it straight into the PA.

Now I play a MarkBass amp and a Vox ampPlug for home noodling but I’m keeping the Behringer around, it was better than the VSTs I tried.

I like the Ampeg.BA-108.
They cost about $100.00
Nice boom from them

I have the sansampvt bass Di. It is awesome.

I also have this Behringer sansamp clone that has been sitting in a drawer for the past decade. I remember it sounding pretty decent. It’s yours if you want it just send me your shipping address

Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll let you know if I pull the trigger on a bass. I'm waiting until after Thanksgiving to make a decision.
