Notes from Pitchfork 2023

Peen Simmons

Let’s Get Obtuse!
Ain’t seen an authentic guitar yet. Mostly F guitars. Fake country band is rocking Jazzmasters.

Lots of people El Deeblahblo would call “hipsters.” I.e. 20- and 30-somethings.

@yabba — buttcheek season is waning. It’s now Boobvember. Also more Lycra than @micwalt ’s closet.

Drinking a free red Bull and riding out an edible, so I’m guessing I’m practically @baimun right now.

I'm trippin' too bro. Thought I saw a commercial about a TGI Friday's over in Tijuana. Jonesing for a tamale potato skin.
Shit got real dawg.

Just checked out the lineup. If you're there tomorrow i'd pay good money to see your reaction to JPEGMAFIA.

I would have thought an entire generation would have to die out for bucket hats to come back. We are not doing our job passing on the wisdom we gained the hard way. What's next, puka shells?

Worried about a forced septum piercing or a Dad Hat getting stapled to my head.

Also, #isurvivedsomelightrain2023

I appreciate the update - I've been away from campus for most of the summer and consequently am out of touch with such things (although I also suspect there are regional/climate related differences too and will not be surprised to see that it's still 'cheeks season when things start up again in a few weeks here in the land of endless summer/buttcheeks)

How were Weyes Blood and Big Thief's performances?

Also, the drummer from Big Thief looks like a man who'd wear a bucket hat.

Big Theif was awesome at P Fork bro...I wasn't there, didn't see the performance but take my word....awesome ! Also Drummer always reminds me of Mick Fleetwood.

Weather delay. In line for a vegan doner like a cruelty-free @jbj. Not nearly as lit as @Andrew Sak.

SO MANY BUCKET HATS.
jeesus dude...first it's fuckin lycra 1980's and now it's Britpop Buckethats 90's.....no wonder the Z Gen is so fucked....these wannabe hipsters need to choose a decade to appropriate

also not trying to Hi Jack yer thread but would this girl from Gila Bend Zona fit in at P Fork...she's wearing Lycra

and just cuz this is the most fitting place to dump this video here is some mean streets of Tucson

Weyes Blood was excellent. Big high concept 60s FM pop soundtrack to Walt Disney’s Dark Shadows. She’s an excellent vocalist and her rhythm section did a great job of adding oomph and propulsion to all those big swooping songs. Best set of the night and one of the best things I’ve seen in years.

Big Thief were very good. Probably the best playing “band” of the day in terms of people who had chops and were feeding off each other in an organic way. Set pacing was a little wonky, but they’re a good group and the whole situation was that kind of comfy well-done thing that you could hang out in a field and listen to forever.

Snail Mail was a casualty of the rain delay. Saw some other smaller bands who were alright. Pitchfork’s handling of the temporary evacuation was pretty lousy—like is this is being handled by disorganized stoned college student vs. professional event coordinators. The whole thing started with some guy interrupting the band and saying “Um there’s weather so unfortunately Pitchfork is cancelled in 20 min.” The sun was actually out but plenty of people got on the train and just went home. I chatted with both crew and security on the way out and found out that it was pretty likely to be back on, so I just hung out under the L tracks while the drizzle passed.

All the “stay tuned to socials” was useless, so you really just needed to talk to the crew periodically—but you had to ask. There was basically no coordination or expectation setting. This happens often enough with big events in Chicago—storms roll through or threaten. You should be able to communicate it clearly by now.

And Big Thief’s drummer was rocking a dad cap.

This video has it all…80s music appropriation, bucket hats, Lycra and DadHats.Peen wasn’t lying

Guitar roundup:

Fender Offsets are still the alt guitar of choice. After that teles. One strat. No authentic electrics (though a few acoustics). Smattering of Collings, D’Angelico, etc. things. But if you’re sitting at the cool table, you’re playing a Jazzmaster.

There’s also this whole safari chic strain in bro/masc lady fashion—I swear I saw a guy in a pith helmet. And bad staches are back with Gen Z dudes.

Lastly, I thought Black Belt Eagle Scout’s set was pretty good. Very PNW indie rock. Also this local band Deeper sounded good, but dude needs to pay royalties to the Cure/Joy Division.
