Klon Centaur -

I couldn't tell you, as I've never played one. But the $180 klone I got from Mojo Pedals is pretty cool. Not $1600 cool, though.

yeah. I'd rather have an amp. As a matter of fact thats more than my Suhr Badger cost me used.

Dumble is to amps as the Klon is to pedals lmbo

yeah, but the Klon guy never went on and on about crystal lettuce and whatnot. he just built a pedal and then stopped making it. there are plenty of other brands with prices along the same lines. look at the prices of original Way Huge pedals. there's an original Aqua Puss on ebay right now for $725. it's a BOSS DM-2 clone, and those go for $300.

hopefully my Foxrox TZF will achieve the same kind of collector's status.

There have been times I thought about letting some of my old pedals go. Too sentimental though ie: A/DA Flanger (late 70's), MXR Flanger (70's) and White Face Rat (mid 80's).

Not as much money as the Aqua Puss or the Klon, but still something if I wanted to let it go - not going to.

RATs have gotten stupidly expensive lately. i'm glad i have my Alligator Snake Charmer clone.

btw - the LED is bright green and will burn out your retinas.

The blinding light show eh?

With all the clones on the market, it is surprising how much the collectable market really is - supply vs. demand.

take it a step further, my friend built this pedal. with all the clone kits on the market, why bother buying pre-built pedals at all?

True if you are looking for vintage type pedals. If you consider some of the newer things from IE: Wampler, TC and Xotic of which I own - the clone market is not there. Granted I could have cloned the front end of an Echoplex (ie: EP with mods).

However I am just doing it with amps vs. pedals.

i would be very surprised if any of those builders' products are more than a few tweaks away from the basic circuits. not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just a basic fact of guitar electronics.

I understand this part of it. I guess my question is: In a world of so many pedals, what drives the demand for the Klon? Does it really sound that much different or better than other overdrives that makes guitarists seek it out?

the Klon is no longer a piece of equipment. it's a collector's item, and is priced accordingly.

Convenience, I suppose. But then I've never paid more than $100 for a pedal -- most I bought for less than $50.

Unless a pedal has been built with electronics that are no longer being manufactured, I just can't fathom some of these prices.

Get off my lawn.

i dunno, i've never played one. all it really takes are a couple of TGP approved players, such as Warren Haynes and John Mayer, and people will continue to buy into it. much in the same way that collectors extoll the virtues of vintage instruments over current production models, thereby making them more desirable and driving the prices up.

Agreed. The Wampler Paisley Drive is centered around the JRC4558 ie: Tube Screamer with many variations. A lot of bells and whistles added which gives it its own flavor. The Xotic line is different as they cover up part of their circuitry so it is harder to reverse engineer. My Sansamp II is the same way.

Sometimes it makes me wonder about the buzz word of Sparkle or Clarity since much of today's pedals have gone back to true bypass vs. FET bypass. The FET bypass added in some color which takes away from the other buzz word - "Transparent".

I do have to say though regarding the TC stuff, it is different and much improved over the past. The other item is a well is the bucket brigade are much more different and improved as back when.
