Pre-Owned 1983 Gibson Moderne

A Moderne Marvel

The Gibson Moderne has always been a legendarily elusive guitar. Though blueprints of the original design exist, and several players claim to have seen original Modernes in music shops or at gigs, no one has ever been able to produce an example of the original 1958 guitar. In the early 1980s, Gibson decided to resurrect the Moderne based on those original blueprints, and they built 143 reissues with Tim Shaw-designed humbuckers and korina bodies. Though this serial is rare and collectable, it would be a mistake to consider it a mere collector’s item, because it sounds AWESOME! The bridge position has chunky low-end, classic PAF-style raspy midrange, and sizzling highs, and the neck pickup manages to sound thick and rich like melted chocolate while remaining clear thanks to its transparent high end. The three-piece korina neck also feels as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans! So, if you’re looking for piece of rock history that plays and sounds great, look no further than this marvelous Moderne!

Condition of Instrument
This Moderne has accumulated a fair amount of wear over the course of its thirty-five year life, and natural playwear has given it a worn-in, vintage look. There are some dings, checks, and scratches throughout the finish, with a few bigger ones on the bass edge of the body and the top of the headstock. There is also some moderate-to-heavy tarnishing on the hardware, some buckle rash on the back, and a crack in the logo on the headstock, which is a little loose but still attached. The frets have plenty of life left in them, though! This guitar comes with a well-worn brown Gibson hardshell that fits this singular body shape.

I hate the headstock, but the overall shape is cool. I'd never buy one, but the Rev Billy G sure makes it work.

I never understood the appeal of those.

If your headstock design requires four string trees, you might want to go back to the drawing board.
Straight string pull is not a concept that has made it the Gibson Corp. yet.

What nightmare.

And I almost bought one for $1,200 in 99 or so. At the time, I thought $1200 was way too much for a guitar
I still do. For most guitars.

Regarding this one, if that guy who used to hang around here that modified guitars with hot glue and tape somehow stuck a fender style neck on there that would intonate and stay in tune, I might like it better.
