Dumble Overdrive Special

Stealing Your Riffs
I've always been curious about gear...especially stuff that's rare. I'm extra curious about Dumble amps because I've read a lot about them but I've never seen one in person. I've only heard them via recordings.

I stumbled across these videos on YouTube one day. I found them interesting and thought they might be worth sharing here. Since, I've never been able to check out a Dumble ODS in person, this seemed like the next best thing.

The subject of Dumble always seems to stir up controversy around the web in guitar communities. Please feel free to comment, make jokes or throw poo. It's all good.

I wanted one once back in the 80's when I first heard of it and how certain artist sounded. It was tone I wanted and finally when I was close to moving towards one, the line went from 6 months to a year wait - this was in 1989. My Mesa/Boogie Mark IIB was a 3 month wait and that was in 1979. As for the Dumble, I just decided to blow off the idea when one of my MI instructors wanted one and he had a hell of a time just trying to get in line.

I find the whole nutjob mystique of Howard Dumble and the Dumble aficionados way more interesting than the amps themselves. If I had unlimited resources to throw at tone-seeking, that's not the direction I would head.

Me, too. By all accounts, they're good amps but the law of diminishing returns kicks in somewhere north of $3k.

Obviously, I haven't been around here much. I thought people mostly stick to posting in the Lounge. Since when did posts need to be on topic? This place gets more like TGP every day.

people do stick to the lounge. that's the problem. Mark has asked us in the past to post in the on-topic forums, even including a New Posts button to direct posters to those forums. as long as we're here, we might as well post there. and with the new forumites coming in, you're missing quite the discussion in the on-topic forums.

Ok. I'm fine with Mark, or somebody else, moving this thread to the proper area. It is much easier to search archived topics if they are organized properly, by subject matter.

In the past, I've posted in the other areas besides the lounge. But, it seems like those threads don't get much notice.

I forgot about these videos until today. Then, I wondered if people in this community knew about them. I thought I'd share them in case somebody might be interested. Peace out. wave0

The Dumble amp mystique strikes me as nuts. I never played one, but the prices they command, and the lengths people go to get that sound, are beyond me.

If your seeking the crystal lettuce, there's plenty of guys offering a suitable alternative for the rest of us; Like Bludotone, Fargen, Fuchs, Glasswerks, ect. or hunt down the infamous TNT from Quinn.

Or just get a strat, an Eric Johnson fuzzface, a Giggity into a Fender Deluxe or clean Marshall or Boogie and:

IDK, I think the 'grail' style DOS tone is a bit more subtle than that. This is a nice clip in general, IMO

^ I really like that clip. I've probably watched that 'Dumble ODS-100 played with Flaxwood Liekki Custom' clip more than 15 times over the last few years.

Robben Ford, who's famously associated with Dumble amps, does not always use the real thing. He gigs with a Zen Drive in front of a Fender Deluxe Reverb.

Here's a cool demo of two Dumble-voiced pedals (Ethos and Zen Drive).

A two-rock will get you there. It's not my cup of tea though. I've played through the ceriatone ODS, but it was fizzy to me, but I didn't have any time to set up the amp to my liking.

I am a total Dumble fanboy. That's one reason I own an MDT (though I haven't coaxed the Dumble tones out yet). I also have a project build of a Ceriatone Overtone Special getting close to getting my attention. My favorite Dumble sounds come from Robben Ford.
