Jedi: Fallen Order

cvogue

Yes, that's Oolong. :)
Got this for Christmas, big SW fan so I was stoked! Been playing it on PC with mouse/keyboard and until a certain place in the game that I just got past it was really good.

But... and this sounds like bad game design to me... there's a mechanic in the game where you slide down surfaces (could be pretty long) and you use the A/D keys to move back and forth. Easy enough in the early going but yesterday I got to an area with some icy trails you have to slide down and if you don't do it right you just slide off a cliff... and if you do do it "right" you're probably not set up to grab the rope to get you across a chasm and you slide off another cliff. Took me dozens of times (and a good hour) to get past this 10 second part of the game and it was frustrating as hell. Almost rage quit. Was a great game up to that point.

Wondering if a controller vice mouse/keyboard would be better but the online conventional wisdom says it really doesn't matter.

Anyone else playing Fallen Order? Again it's a great game except for this part... I do enjoy lightsabering the crap out of everything!

Thanks for the warning. I was thinking about getting it for the kids but that shit sounds like something an eight year old couldn’t pull off.

Well be aware I'm a casual gamer, the kids are a lot better at this than I am! But having said that it could be extremely frustrating for an 8 year old...

Others online have complained about that aspect of gameplay as well. Too bad, most of the rest of the game is really good:

From another article, sums it up nicely:

The game also has some basic design issues, most clearly in a series of truly terrible slide sequences that the developers were clearly much more enamored with than they should’ve been. Clearly we’ve learned nothing since the Nintendo 64 days, or else someone at Respawn would’ve pointed out that sticking players on a fast-moving patch of ice and requiring precise maneuvering and jumping at complex angles is the worst. One planet in particular is littered with slides, but they’re also Fallen Order’s go-to way to get Cal between far-off zones on most of the planets you visit. They seem like a side-effect of Respawn’s relative inexperience in this kind of game, but that’s no excuse.

The bugs are ugly and the slides are a nightmare, but they don’t hold Fallen Order back as much they could have. Lightsaber combat is rarely as fun or interesting as it is in this game, and the plot hits some tragic notes that the bigger Star Wars stories tend to skip over—the Jedi Purge got a sorrowful montage in Revenge Of The Sith and the Rebels cartoon dealt with Jedi having to hide who they are, but this is one of the first times a mainstream piece of modern Star Wars canon has emphasized just how horrifying it was for the Good Guys to suddenly realize they had been totally played and that the Bad Guys had already won. It took a long time, but EA finally figured out how to put the Star Wars rights to good use.

Stuff like that sucks - when I was playing the campaign in Modern Wafare it took me hours to get past one section that was basically moving from one building across a courtyard to a bit of cover. After a while I realised must be done following a certain path - OK it was on the hardest difficulty but there was no let up - stick your head round a certain corner and it's getting hit by a sniper, hide behind this crate and you're getting flanked by CPU that doesn't spawn otherwise.

The 2nd time I played through I nailed it in 1 but it seems so needless to have it set up like that. Really messed up what was otherwise a good level.

I'm having horrible flashbacks to the spinning spiked pillars in the God of War Remaster.

Just saw a video of that... yeah that looks frustrating as hell too! The collision detection seems crappy in that part of that game, you get anywhere near one of the blades and you're dead. :/

Sliding is dumb. I'm also really rusty when it comes to twitch gaming. I struggled on certain parts of The Last of Us on normal and my 13 year old beat it on hard in about 2 days over Christmas break. Little shit.

OK finished the game. My assessment is basically what I said before. Overall the game is very good. It is very difficult for anyone less than a serious gamer in certain parts but adjusting the difficulty level will get you past any difficult battle... and that's a problem as the lowest difficulty level is too easy while the second lowest is often too hard (for a casual gamer like me). Again the game mechanics issues (sliding sequences etc...) where especially troublesome because adjusting the difficulty level doesn't help.

But despite my grumbling the game is good, very good. If you're a SW fan it's a must play IMO. Once you get the hang of your evolving Force abilities it is a LOT of fun. The voice acting is great (especially Cal the main character) and the story is engaging if a bit thin (but this is a game after all). And your sidekick droid BD-1 is cool as hell!

Bottom line is... I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Just found this thread! Yes it was a great game. Needed a few more places to visit and the sliding was annoying as hell, that would be enough to condemn most games but this one shines!

Are there any add ons or new missions or anything?
