Question: just curious, how many folks here have NEVER taken a guitar in for a set-up?

Peeker

jerkass
I've always done it myself.
only electrics, mind ya (basses & guitars)

and I've never had a problem.
I might take longer than a pro (no doubt), but I get the job done, and since it's easier to KNOW what I want than to explain what want, it seems to work for me.
plus I don't have to pay anyone

reminds me, my black Rich needs a tune-up
that's what I get for not keeping it in a case when the weather here is so goofy these days.

I do have to take my 8str bass and my 12str acoustic in for fixes though, but that's mostly all soldering stuff, and I suck at that shit.
plus, I don't have the tools to access the jack on the 12.
maybe if my arms were even skinnier, it wouldn't matter, all it needs it a jack tightening...

the 8str needs the selector knob (instead of a toggle, it's 5 position knob) replaced, I think.
it's fucked, either way.
makes all kinda noise, except on the one selection I DON'T wanna use

but neck, action & intonation?
comes natural to me, as long as I have a tuner handy

CHRIST!

I bird just hit my window!
scared the shit outta me!

that really has nothing to do with the topic though :embarrassed:

I've taken them in before...

But not anymore. Not since I tried to learn it myself a few years ago. I admit I have trouble diagnosing the neck simply by sighting down it. But I can recognize the symptons of a neck that needs adjusting. From there it's a labor of love for me. Adjusting the neck, then the action, and repeating as necessary to get it playing just right.

I did....one time....and I was so dissatisfied with it that I learned how to do it myself

If something is well and truly goobered up, I'll take it in. Otherwise, the few times I've paid for a "pro" setup, I've felt cheated.

I did a set-up on a Floyd once. ONCE. After that I'd drop them off.

I don't normally get a set-up at all though. It plays how it plays and as long as it isn't buzzing or choking, I'm cool.

i only bring them in when the issue is beyond my skills. i do all of my own minor tweaking. but cutting saddles, shimming necks, dressing frets, etc.; i leave to the pros.

OOOOOH!

I"ve never had to do any of that shit!

I just meant neck fixes, action, and intonation

never had to to do any other stuff

I've never paid for a setup but I have had them done. I have since learned to to them myself and I kind of enjoy it. If anything is really out of whack they go back the ranch.

I'm a DIY guy. Mechanical and electrical work is a natural, I guess. None of my guitars have been in too bad of shape, so that helps.
Hell, it isn't rocket surgery!

I've never had any of my guitars over the years professionally set up.

Always done it myself.

Really never had an issue, even with a FR. Sure, you've got to take your time with it, but it ain't rocket science........
Patience is the key. Put it down and come back to it if you get frustrated.

My first guitar, a Takamine dreadnaught I got in 1975 has never been set up, serviced or been seen by any kind of tech. I got it new and it always played fine. The bridge has a hairline crack that I'd like to fix but my family bought me a new guitar to replace it so I haven't had any incentive to take it in.
