So I am not producing any new lessons for the rest of the year but I thought I would do a "Best of" series of past lessons...here are my first 4 lessons on Minor Pentatonic Phrasing as well as the most recent series on playing the scales more "laterally" and out of the "Box Patterns".

Have fun!

you have giant gorilla hands.

i can play the 8th fret with my 3rd finger, but i have to stretch to get there. for you it looks like the 8th fret is actually under your 3rd finger.

at what point do the frets get too narrow for you? even i start getting cramped up by the 19th.

I do have some trouble starting at the 19th fret on some guitars...

noted.

i've got enough books to choke an ox right now. including the three i'm working on, plus the Berklee Method next, i also have all of the Fretboard Logic books to work on (including the DVD and the bass version). and then you're gonna write Book 2, so i'll have that to work on.

so let's talk books in about 5 years. biggrin

you have quite the study program going...I wish I had the time for that. Right now I am just working my chops back up for our show on the 6th....

I need one of those. I keep having problems with shin splints that interferes with my running.

p.s.

That guitar scale guru is REALLY good. It makes things really REALLY simple to understand. If I get time I will post a couple of scans.

Do you generally target certain of the scale degrees in the pentatonic scale for bending (and do you avoid others)? Starting out, it would make sense to me to avoid R to m3 and 5 to m7 just because they are bigger bends, but are there other guidelines in play? Thanks.

I don't...the thing to remember is that a bend is just another way of articulating the movement from one note to another. the only real important thing is that you need to know where you are bending TO.

I usually see students (and other players)bending notes without any consideration that the next note in the scale might be a minor 3rd or a half step instead of the usual whole step. Thats when I suggest that they not play certain parts of the scale until the can do those types of bends accurately.

Makes sense. I was watching some snippet on YouTube in which the guy said you "never" bend certain notes because it would sound terrible, so was curious.

Link? I'm curious what other wisdom this fine fellow has...

I'll try to figure it out and post it. (I watched several last night.) He was using the basic box for A minor at the 5th fret and said, for example, you'd never bend the Root note on the first string (5th fret) or the 5th on the second string (5th fret). What confused me was I think he also said you'd never bend the Minor 3rd on the third string (5th fret), but said the Minor 3rd on the first string (8th fret)--i.e., same note, different string--was ripe for bending.

Sounds like he just wanted you to do the easy "whole step with the 3rd finger" bends. Its a good place to start but a bad way to teach it...
