Joe Rogan's Spotify deal...does this change everything?

Spotify now has two of the most popular podcasts in the US (the other is Last Podcast On The Left). As far as changing everything, it just gets people who were listening to these on other sites to listen to spotify.

It kind of feels like when Sirius got Stern to leave “”terrestrial” radio.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens. We've already seen fights to lock in famous gamers on the relevant streaming services. Maybe we'll see a similar gold rush for podcasts. It'll be interesting to see how many minor celebrities and radio hosts move to streaming.

Is Spotify still living off investor money, or are they actually accountable to make a profit? That would say a lot as to whether it is a moonshot (like Stern) or a well reasoned move.

I don't listen to JRE or use Spotify, so for me this just reminds me of cable TV--I've never watched ESPN in my life, so I'm not interested in paying for a service that gives the lions share of my money to a channel I'm never watching.

I don't use Spotify. And whatever interest I had in maybe signing up (which was never very much) has now died.

Joe Rogan is insufferable, so having him cordoned off in the Spotify ecosystem so I never see him again is a good thing.

Exactly....I w3as going to mention Last Podcast on the left. back when it was on other platforms and on Apple is was the number three or four and Rogan was within 2 slots from it I believe, they were both in the top five let's say. The Last Podcast on the left is the one that SARTED THE TREND when they moved exclusively to spotiify in JANUARY and is why Rogan is now looking to move so if things do change it's only because of TPOTL, not Rogan.

I'm a huge fan of LPOTL so I opened a FREE spotify account to listen solely to that. I have a couple others on as well now but the majority of my podcasts are still on Apple podcast although these days about the only podcasts i listen to are LPOTL and occasionally New England Legends and NPR up first...so I just do those on spotify. I still use and prefer4 Apple Music for music and they still have the best selection of artists and catalog for music, it's realy close but AM still has the bext music catalog.

I think audiences have an insatiable appetite for new content that is also safe, liked, and familiar. And talk shows can do that a lot more efficiently, more readily, and more consistently than artists ever can.

But yeah, musicians have virtually no agency in terms of being able to negotiating with streaming services like Spotify. Their work is gonna be there, whether they like it or not.

I sometimes check the Joe Rogan subreddit to see what is happening with him out of curiosity.

It's hilarious how many of his fans make fun of him mercilessly. Especially in recent times. Like straight up saying his netflix stand up special is god awful and he should retire, talking about how repetitive and two-dimensional he is, and laughing at him for his half-baked ideas that make no sense. Like his own fans posted this... and it got 12 thousand upvotes.

There are a minority of morons saying that he is going to spotify to protest 'censorship' on youtube (and definitely not the money!). Even though Spotify regularly removes people like Alex Jones at their whim. So much for that, idiots.

Yep. Podcasts — especially glorified talk show format ‘casts — and YouTube talk shows/personality programs are where the culture is at the moment. Pop music is way far back in the line—and semi-popular and defiantly non-popular pop music doesn’t even rate. This kind of “content generation” is the present and near future of entertainment.

I mean, Spotify is somewhat important if you’re an aspiring new hip hop artist or someone looking to make a splash in contemporary young people pop or various electronic dance music subgenres...I guess. But mostly it matters if you can get yourself playlisted. And that simply isn’t in the cards for most rock/roots/punk/indie/blues/Americana/whatnot folks because no one is really playlisting that stuff in meaningful ways because you can just listen to the classic examples that match the pictures on the reliced tee shirts you bought from Target (or Nordstrom if yr sassy).

The economics of being a musician were never great. And well before COVID new bands were getting smaller (solos, duos, maybe trios) to better weather the harsh environment of touring and living without the benefit of record contracts/sales and the like. And now that the road isn’t a thing and won’t be for possibly years, shit...

So yeah, it makes all the sense in the world for Spotify and similar to lock up these relatively low production cost personalities when new musical content isn’t driving eyeballs and there’s not gonna be summer festival seasons to build hype and drive interest and there’s a finite amount of old classics for people to pour over and no one (other than @Help!I'maRock!) even pretends to give a shit about new music. And, like you said, it’s not like musicians are even in a position to negotiate.

Like art house cinema and a well made ice cream soda, pop music in the grand style of the late 20th century is a doomed thing destined to be mourned by people with the ill fortune to live long enough to meet the future.

that's kind of a pessimistic view don't you think? What would Gary say if he saw this

Gary Blanchard is a folk singer. Half his repertoire is doom and gloom about floods and executions. And the other half is about lovers turned into talking birds and murdered by cruel maidens.

PROTIP: Do not go walking by the river, the well, or any other body of water with Gary Blanchard.

I’ve never really gotten into podcasts.
You be all made me question my Spotify account. I mean, I don’t think I really use it that much.
And for the amount of time my wife uses the Google speaker to listen to ABBA while gardening, I could rig something else up for her and save 9 bucks a month.

I don't believe you. Gary would probably say t"hat is your opinion and it's valid and that you have a right to your opinion" I think Gary would agree to disagree.

Deebo loves him some tech-bro corporate gig economy selling out. Apple. Amazon. Spotify. He’s Mr. Boomer in terms of screwing over the little guy for minor conveniences.

Hope everybody else catches the irony in this. Growing up, the best music was on FM not AM. And now, AM radio is mostly sports and politics. I understand you are using AM for Apple Music but, seeing AM, my brain automatically goes to radio... in a thread about Spotify and Rogan, not music.

Did I say i love Spotify...no bro. You need to learn and return. I do love me the access of subscription music. J. Garcia once said "once the music leaves our hands is the peoples" ....something to that effect. No artist on any major streaming service is starving....they are not in the unemployment line.
I do love Amazon, not gonna lie. Jeff as big as he is and as douche as he is still focuses on customer service...you got a problem and it's taken care of. When Useless pieces of Shit left a package for me in December that got stolen , well i couldn't ever even contact anybody. luckily It was bought on Amazon....one call, no menus and i was speaking to someone...that day i had a refund.
Useless Pieces of Shit once again is holding a package hostage since wednesday of last week...it has gone out for delivery three times (supposedly) with no delivery attempts and is now scheduled for Tuesday. The company i purchased from was not Amazon...I can't get a refund because "it's not lost"
I do support local and I like to buy DIY (DdBob has lots of purchases from Etsy going back to 2008 or so) and smaller business(Ddbob just bought a "ballcap' from THIS PLACE and he got it in two days and wants to give a shout out because DdBob is not even a hat guy but god damn these are fucking exceptionally amazing!
DdBob is also eyeballing a shirt from this place
