When watching a gear review, things that automatically make you…..

When reading a gear review (or watching a youtube review), things that automatically make you say “WTF?… Next” and click off?

Reading a guitar review and they complain about the pickup height. :annoyed: Come on… probably someone who can’t change their own damn strings.

And typically, if I’m watching a guitar, amp, or effect review and they immediately start the demo playing with “Chugg chug chuggitty chug chug…”. Like what is the fucking point? All guitars and amps sound exactly the same when you’re playing like that. It’s more percussive than any kind of tone, sustain, or anything useful in the review.

Turns me off when dude can’t play for shit. That’s probably unfair, as one could be very knowledgeable about gear and just not be a great player, but I can’t help it.

I need them to be able to play in tune, and preferably with a few different styles to demonstrate how the gear responds to different player attack and manipulation.

The flip side of this is reviews like Pete Thorn.... who could make a Hello Kitty Squire through a Line6 Spider sound heavenly. Typically after I'm done drooling over one of his vids, I have to go find a normie to separate the Pete from the Gear. :helper:

At the same time, with people like Shawn Tubbs, Mike Hermans, and Richard Watson, I'm thinking that the pedal is never going to make me sound that amazing. :lol::facepalm:

Starting with everything at 12 o'clock. What, didn't you prepare anything? Stop wasting my time. Why would you ever do that in anger, unless that, by some divine luck, just happens to be where the thing shines?

When reviewing amps your primary focus should be on the.. amp. Yes, it's good to know if it takes pedals well, and what kinds, but do consider if this is an amp review or a pedal review.

And please, you don't need to explain what the switches on JMs and Jags do. Chances are, when people click on the video, guess what, they already know that. These guitars have been around for more than sixty years. What we're interested in is what this particular model sounds like in each position and if the quality is any good.

Do not play fast. At least not until later on. Strums and single notes, literally, make it a lot easier for us to hear what it actually sounds like, from attack to decay.

I've always said that Pete Thorn can make a fart in a cardboard box sound amazing.

Gotta say, though, even Trogly is a significantly better player than he used to be. He used to be so meh and now he's serviceable.

I can’t stand people playing generic Texas blues or jazz fusion in demos. It’s worst when it’s a bass player trying to Larry Graham their way through some weird jazzy parts. Show me what the gear sounds like for music people actually listen to.

I avoid most produced review content these days cause everything sounds too damn good. Guys like Andy can make anything sound awesome.

I'll specifically look for garbage quality videos someone filmed and uploaded from their phone in their house. No talking, just run the gear through it's paces. If I like what I hear from that, I know I'll have no problem w/ the gear.

Not wearing pants. Touching their weiner.

That reminds me… I got a random call that I figured was from a spammer….. and this was my response.

Don’t try to impress me with you playing. Just strum a few chords throw out a lick or two and tell me what’s good or bad about it. Show me a real clean sound, an OD tone, and heavy dist if you must but that’s not something I really care about. Are the frets well dressed, are the knobs, tuners, and switches solid for the price point? Is the bridge stable? What’s the neck profile? What styles can the gear cover? What’s it best at and worst at? I tuned in to find out about the gear not fanboy over your guitar ability and waste my time on the obvious.

I hardly watch gear demos anymore unless I'm really interested in that piece of gear, and in many cases, I don't find the review very helpful for so many reasons already mentioned here. I don't want to know what this 60 dollar pedal sounds like run through your 2200 dollar amp after it's already been part of a chain of thousands of dollars worth of pedals.

Having once owned a 1966 Fender Dual Showman head that I ran into a Peavey 412MS... To get that thing to overdrive would've rearranged my internal organs from 300 yards.
I don’t think a Dual Showman will overdrive at all (at least without mods). When I saw Dick Dale he had the volume on his all the way up and it was still clean. That tone was glorious, totally worth the tinnitus.
