Best brand for appliances?

jbj

Poor old Geordie's array...
So gear up for plenty of new kitchen build posts from me

What's your thoughts on appliance brands?

Weve already got a smeg extractor sorted but are also looking at:

Gas hob (preferably glass)
Single oven
Fridge freezer

We bought Frigidaire when I did our kitchen over. It’s the same as Electrolux. The mrs hates the appliances. We had kitchenaid before this. Much nicer stuff.

Smeg extractor???

Our new kitchen is mostly Kitchenaide. I got overruled on the fridge, it will be Samsung. Our current fridge is a Samsung and has been pretty solid, but I have had some quibbles with it.

We have an LG refrigerator, stove and microwave and a Bosch dishwasher. We didn't get them all at the same time, we just replaced them when the old ones broke.

Hows the LG stuff? Ive seen a bosch hob and single oven I like the look of but no idea on a fridge - are they THAT different from each other?

Bosch

After going with them I’ll never go back. The difference in quality from anything else is huge. I can’t even hear the dishwasher and I’ve never seen a dishwasher that cleaned better.

I don't know that they are that different. but we've had them all about six years and haven't had any problems with any of them. We got the Bosch dishwasher because our Kenmore dishwasher leaked ruined a number of our cabinets. The Bosch has five leak detectors and it's extremely quiet and efficient.

Our dishwasher and washing machine arent very old but I want to go back to integrated so I'll keep that in mind.

This kitchen is going to end up costing more than our wedding

Our current kitchen (other than the fridge) has been Bosch-equipped since we remodeled it 7 years ago. On the whole I agree it is good stuff and looks nice too. I see them as positioned somewhere between the "normal" lines of appliances and the luxury ones like Viking.
  • The dishwasher has been outstanding as Rev says, works great and is super quiet. Online reviews for their dishwashers reflect that (or they did a few years ago when I was looking into it).
  • The range hood (extractor?) looks fantastic but a couple issues, main one being the motor leaks a drop of motor oil every now and then, and I have to be vigilant about wiping those up or they eventually get on the filter and can drip onto the stovetop or whatever I'm cooking. Also there is a lot of vibration at all three fan settings, but that could be an issue with the installation rather than the unit itself.
  • Repairs and replacement parts for Bosch come at a premium price, and some repair outfits don't even service them at all (as well as Viking et al). I learned this recently when our oven door went wonky and the hinges had to be replaced.

So far I haven’t needed any repairs. Our range hood does not Gabe any issues.

We lucked out on the service. Our dealer services them and at a reasonable rate. t least when the serviced our Fridgidaire.

If you can get a dealer like that that offers service, that would really pay off in this case. Next time I'll know. :)

Ours is fine. But it seems like the german dishwashers stink if they are not run every other day, which defeats the water saving features. I do clean out the trap, but it seems like the design would make that less necessary.

I don't know of a better washer. Our Whirlpool did not clean nearly as well. But I wish that part was better.

We had Whirlpool and I’m not a fan. The fridge sucked. We replaced it with an LG ad I’m not in one with it either.

Remember when you could use the fridge your parents bought in 1987 and handed down to you in 1998 and it worked for another 10 years? That sit doesn’t seem to disturb anymore. I need an iPhone app to diagnose a problem with my four month old appliance.

Honestly it depends on your budget. If I had my dream kitchen it would be a Bosch washer, Viking Stove/Oven, and Sub-Zero Fridge/freezer.
Or the Samsung Fridge with the 25 inch video door. Just because it's awesome.

I don’t know why you care about a water saving feature. You can save water just like you can’t waste it.

Ours has a built in grinder so there’s no trap to clean.

I think that is what I am saying. Food gets hung up in the grinder, and then stinks after a day or two. We probably run the machine about 2-3x a week on average.

you can take the lid off the grinder thing and wash it out, which ends up being what I have to do sometimes, too often for my tastes. Seems like that should be less necessary.

Weird, I haven’t had that issue.

You have just you and your wife in the house, right? I have up to 3 teens/young adults plus us two depending on who is home. They may not rinse the food as well as we would like. I think that contributes. It seems a bit better after the second of three flew the coop several weeks ago.
