I like to consider these things by imagining the worst I know from both genres. I think that gives yacht rock the win. There were some hair metal things that were not awful, but I still have to give the overall win to yacht.

Since CSN, Doobie Brothers, Dan Fogelberg, Kenny Loggins and Gerry Rafferty, Steely Dan and the Eagles are all considered Yacht Rock, I find that includes some of my favorite music. (Though I must confess I prefer the early Eagles to the Hotel California Eagles.)
