Does anyone here still make ice cubes with a tray?

I have a couple of plastic trays I freeze stock in. I also have some round and oversized ones for fancy ice for cocktails.

Have you tried the insulated tumbler thing for making big crystal clear cocktail ice? It's pretty nifty.

no, but that sounds cool

Take an insulated drink tumbler and fill it half to two thirds full. Stick it in the freezer. A few hours to overnight, depending on how large you want the ice. Take it out, turn it upside down in the sink and let it thaw until the ice drops. If it was a long freeze, just shave off the cloudy part with a knife. You can also temper the ice and cut it into different sizes, shapes.

The insulated tumbler causes directional freezing and with push all bubbles, minerals, etc to the bottom as the water freezes.

I’ve used ice trays to make ice cubes when the icemaker was broken and I was waiting on a part. I actually prefer ice “cubes” over the ice maker shape but I’m too lazy.

i have some silicone rubber forms to make two or three inch spherical ice. It’s nice to make mixed drinks with but with all the hassle it’s only for special occasions. Also, I don’t drink much anymore.

If you freeze a cup of water, then sit a quarter on it, you can check it when you come back from vacation, being evacuated, whatever. If the quarter is still on top, everything in your freezer is good.

You can put Mentos inside ice cubes. Then when your kid puts them in a glass a Coke, they become a time bomb.

I don't remember the last time I made an ice cube

this. I think I’ve had an ice maker in my fridge for probably the last 30 years. The one in our current fridge goes out every few months. I turn the ice maker off, but a bag of ice. Once the bag is gone, turn the ice maker back on and it’s working again. I’d probably replace the fridge if I wasn’t planning on selling the house next summer.

Budd and Rick Dalton used ice trays to make their margaritas.

It may have not been the same jug.
