Eagles Dethrone Michael Jackson’s Thriller for Best-Selling Album of All Time
Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) has overtaken Jackson’s classic

Eagles’ album Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) has retaken the spot of best-selling album of all time in the United States, passing Michael Jackson’s Thriller. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, the 1976 compilation has been certified 38x platinum (via Billboard). Thriller has been bumped to second at 33x platinum, while another Eagles album—1977’s Hotel California—is the third-best-selling album at 29x platinum.

Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) was the best-selling album in the U.S. in the 20th century. Upon Michael Jackson’s death in 2009, sales of Thriller overtook Eagles’ record and placed it in the number one spot.

Did millions of people go out and buy Their Greatest Hits in the last five years or did the band audit album sales and find millions of unreported sales?

Don't know. But I actually went out and bought it within the last 5 years. I suspect the documentary film would have boosted sales.
 
That album, on 8 track I believe, met a horrible end in the van we ended calling the "Chia Van" after it sat under the fir trees and cedars out at my folks' house for years. A fitting end. Though those songs seem to be the most effective ear worms ever devised. Devils, those guys were.

When a greatest hits CD is the best selling pop album of all time it says a lot about the buying public......and I'm part of the buying public. And no - I have never owned the Eagles Greatest hits.......
 
Like Mr Prometheus, we are destined to be punished by having our livers pecked out by The Eagles while chained to the Rock of Roll for all eternity.

A long time ago, we used to go hang at a local tavern in Packwood, WA when we were skiing at White Pass. This was at the close of the big timber years. At least once, and maybe more than once, we were asked by young ladies to leave the bar and go hang at a party 'in the clear cut". We always politely declined.

It makes logical sense that a greatest hits album would out sell regular albums. Theoretically, they're filled with a higher concentration of proven songs. The fact that they are more likely to sell is why they were released in the first place.

What's dumb is Glen's Frey's face.
