Farm Aid 2012: A Recap

Got to the stadium at about 4:15, older parents in tow (bought dad a ticket for his b-day) and squirmed through the sold out venue to our seats in the right-center about 60 rows back. Performers in order of appearance:

Jamey Johnson: just finishing up his set when we got there. Know nothing of the man's work, quite scraggly looking, played what appeared to be country-rock-esque tunes. Did not want. C-

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals: hot chick, great set of pipes, music didn't really do it for me but did perform a ballad with Willie Nelson which was kinda cool. Chick can sing, and can also use my face as a seat any day. B-

Jack Johnson: did a few solo numbers, then got a band to come out for a few more. Each performer was allotted approximately 50 minutes, some went over, more on that later. Jack sounded good, very laid back style of acoustic-pop. My girlfriend was in love. B+

Kenny Chesney: I used this opportunity to procure some nourishment and intoxicants in the form of overpriced beer and chicken fingers. Chicken fingers acquired (eventually), beer lines wrapped around the venue. I'm pretty sure our friend waited over an hour, then he waited some more, for beer. To hell with that, I remained sober that night on principle. That venue was not designed for that many people, it was a clusterfuck. Girlfriend found $18 on the ground, I bought a chicken fingers basket and a water for $12. Sat down to the end of "She Thinks My Tractor is a Lonely Bottle of Whiskey on the Farm" or whatever the fuck and was ready for the next act. Dude played way over his allotted time, threw off the rest of the concert schedule. Incomplete

Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds: One of the highlights of the show for me. I know people find great joy in hating on Dave Matthews but I'm a fan, plus Tim Reynolds is one of the best guitarists I've ever seen. Great setlist, they both sounded great and even my square old parents were blown away by their performance. A+

John Mellencamp: Seriously? Dude sounds like a hybrid of Tom Waits and Batman with strep throat. I understand it's for a good cause but pass the torch dude, it's kinda embarrassing. D

Neil Young: This was supposed to be my highlight of the night, but I gotta say I was kinda disappointed. As cool as it was just to see the man play, he chose an awful set of songs, and they jammed too much. They played 4 songs in 45 minutes... you do the math. Plus he rambled for 10 minutes about buying local vegetables, etc. etc. instead of playing another tune. Still, dude is a legend and it was good to see him before he hangs it up. C+

Willie Nelson & Friends: Don't know, we left. Concert was running long to begin with and by that point we were there for 7 hours, it was time to go. Friends said he was good, I've seen him before so I didn't feel too bad about leaving. Incomplete

Overall, a good time. Only a few bright spots musically but it's for a good cause and we all had a pretty good time.

TL/DR: Farm Aid was groovy... kinda.

Shame about Neil, but yeah, those all-day concerts wear me out too.

I had tickets awhile back to see Willie, John "Koo-Gah" Mellencamp, Dylan, and a bunch of other folks, and I got tired just thinking about it, so I didn't go.

Neil Young, JCM are artists I cant stand, and Dave Mathews is fucking scumbag piece of shit, but that's a personal thing that's not music related.

I need to update my "stuff reverend hates" list. I just finished putting down chrome and anything Chevy. :embarrassed:

Not just Chevy, any GM product. I do avoid concerts where I will be bombarded with the artist political opinions. I also hate canned tuna fish, and tuna casserole.

I generally avoid artists whose political opinions I don't like. No need to feed that kitty.

I didn't know Farm Aid was still going on.....

You didn't miss anything missing Kenny Chesney. Formula modern country. Still - he normally sells out arenas by himself so it was nice that he did the show.

My Mom made it EVERY Wednesday, then we had had the leftovers on Thursday. When I moved out I swore never again, ever.

It's funny but tuna casserole is one of the few dishes from my childhood that I absolutely love...not really into the Texas hash or the burger bundles (aka monkey balls), but the tuna casserole is something I used to ask for on my birthday...

Understandable.....

I very rarely repeat meals at home for just that reason. I think I have made tuna casserole once ever.....

There seemed to be a generation of women who had a regular rotation of meals. We tended to have Meatloaf Mondays, Spaghetti Tuesdays, and Fish Stick Fridays. I don't remember what was served the other days, but it was served on a regular schedule. I wonder why that was, and what happened to change it?

I almost went to Farm Aid. I made it as far as Lemoyne to the guitar stores and said the hell with it because I didn't feel like driving to Hershey and fighting the crowds on top of it. I'm not into big "all day" concerts anyway.

I'm with you, there. I can't imagine spending the whole day at a venue, no matter who was playing. I think I have developed ADD in my old age. :old:

In my case, my parents were both school teachers and during the mid-70's my mom didn't have a full time job (long story, but old PA law about not letting pregnant women teach took her out from 1969 until the early 70's, by which time Home Economics teaching jobs had dried up), so we had several creative meals...one of my favorites as a kid but which by the time I hit high school I never wanted again was the homemade pizza. There was some sort of premix dough from chef boyardee or some such that you mixed up and put in a pan and -- voila! -- you had pizza crust. Sort of.

We ate a lot of spaghetti and for a good time I didn't want to make pasta because of that. Of course, it was always spaghetti, never penne or farfalle or any other exotic shape...not even linguine.
