Living the dream
Happy New early fathers day guitar day

Wife urged me to order my FD gift, so I did. Inspired in part by @sunvalleylaw and his recent quest. It's just an entry level guitar, but from the reviews I think it will be fun. I needed a solid body double humbucker guitar, because. I know this violates my first rule of HB's (not enough knobs), it's not mahogany, it's bolt on, yada, yada.
I don't care. Worst part is it will be here next week, and besides checking for shipping damage it will be hidden away for a month before I can play it.

"Vintage Edition" Epi LP Special

Cool! Seems like the basic wood plank with hb guitars have been a recurring theme around here lately.

What kind of wood is it?

That looks quite nice. I am anxious to hear your opinion on it.

She could have had it shipped by USPS; it probably wouldn't arrive before Father's Day then...:annoyed:

Nice! Simple rock guitar. Perfect!

Arrived yesterday! I only had an hour or so to check it for damage and issues before it got boxed back up for the next month. Initial observations.

It's light. Other reviews say ~6.5lbs, which is 30% lighter than your average LP.

I am mentally comparing this to my Affinity Tele, same entry level and price point.

I love the fact that the body and neck are basically just sanded and stained. It has a kind of doghair look and feel with exposed grain pores. This is kind of weird on the back of the neck, but I feel it will be nice.

Actually, getting a feel for the neck was scary, because the fret ends are fucking razor sharp. I kept worrying I was going to slice up my hand and bleed out. At least it would match the body stain.

The neck is a slim C, didn't measure nut width yet, but I eyeballed the thickness at nut and 12 fret with a tape measure, looks to be .75 at the nut and .875 at the 12th. Neck is bound so there is plenty of space one either side of the E strings.

Hardware is cheap as expected. Honestly, I don't understand why both Squier and Epiphone still use those stupid plastic jack plates. Already ordered a chrome one from GFS for $5, which means it's a .39 cent part. Tuners may or may not be OK, will wait and see.

Plugged in, electronics are quiet and the pickups sound pretty nice from what little I played it. Single vol & tone with the switch in the middle, which is how my green Tele is set up so very familiar. I prefer 2x vol tone like my 335, but I get it. I'll likely change out the pots and wiring along the way, but for now they seem servicable.

I'll post an update with pictures and more details once I get it officially and can spend some time with it.

All in all it is on par with the Affinity with the exception of the fret ends. I didn't have to do anything on the tele frets, but will not play this until I get that issue dealt with.

Good bang for the $$ if you are looking for a cheap LP style guitar on a budget as I was. I should have a playable guitar for <$200 when done, with a couple hours of labor.

I bought one of these a few years ago, the only difference being I bought mine with P90's. Considering the very low price it has not let me down one bit. The first thing I noticed was the neck. It seemed to fit my hand perfectly. It was the second electric I had at the time so even though I had tried many it was the first one I owned in which to compare to my other one and it was like night and day.

A few years later I bought an Epi Les Paul Studio. It is a more expensive guitar but I like the neck on the Special better. Of the guitars I have now (which is not a lot, but...) my two Schechter's necks are almost as comfortable, but not quite. The neck on my travel guitar comes closest to the comfort of the neck on the Special.

I have to agree about the fret ends. I have not cut my hand but I can feel the potential for a digital disaster.

I have not changed any hardware on the guitar and it is the only one I can rely upon to be if not in tune but close enough, of all my guitars, no matter how long it goes without being played.

For the price I paid for mine I think it was the best guitar acquisition I have made so far. Especially considering it is the cheapest guitar I have ( I don't buy expensive guitars though).

Looking forward to getting familiar with this guitar. It's been a long time since I had a solid body with buckers. P90's would be fun too. Definitely will be smoothing over the fret ends before I play much on it. If it stays in tune as well as my Teles, I'll be quite happy.
