HNGD Ex-Roommate Freebie El-Cheapocaster Edition

24 Steel Wheels of Shoegaze
Had a roommate move out under unfortunate but manageable circumstances, and she didn't have room to take this Oscar Schmidt 335-clone with her at the new place. I gave her a partscaster I had no use for a while ago so she, in return, gave me this.

This thing needed a couple hours of TLC. The output jack had fallen into the body (it's edge-mounted), but I was able to fish it out with a bit of string and screw on a new washer that I cannibalized from, of all things, my DD-20, because I cannot see any scenario in which I'll be using that thing's headphone jack. I'm gonna go to the store later and grab some blue loctite to put on it (and my other guitars too, for that matter).

It was filthy and coated in bong resin, vape residue, and all sorts of stuff I'd rather not think about. I took off some of the stickers and may end up taking off more. The fingerboard was super nasty to the point I just said "fuggit" and used some alcohol wipes to clean the crud off. After that I soaked it in lemon oil for about a half hour before wiping the excess off, the results are pleasing.

Replaced the strings that were quite literally flaking rust off with a fresh set of D'Addario XL 13-56s, strung her up, intonated her, and she plays way better than any sub-$200 bolt-on archtop electric has any right to play. I was toying with the idea of rewiring her with some hotter dimarzios but the stock no-names are actually really warm and punchy as-is, so I might put that off. I know rewiring a semihollow is a bitch and three quarters but I love challenges. At least it works perfectly for now. I've never owned a semihollow before but I am in love with this thing.

Agreed about rewiring semi-hollows. I have an Epiphone Riviera I want to put new pots and upgraded mini-humbuckers in, but no way I will do the work myself so it will have to wait.

I can back a 73-foot semi truck blind-side around a corner and into an 11-foot wide dock. I'm certain i can rewire a semihollow, i just don't wanna do it *right now*

Not sure those are relatable skills, but go for it. I know how it is supposed to be done, but have put off swapping pickups in my 335 for years because I know what happens if I screw up.

I have a red one and they do feel and play nice. I even like the hot pickups. Nice score the black looks really nice too.

Hollows and semi-hollows are cool. Congrats on yours. It's starting to look good, now that you did a little rehab to it. I assume that you had to widen the nut slots, since you put .013s on it, to avoid the strings from binding in them, when you tune, or do bends?

P.S.. - if you haven't widened the nut slots yet, I can tell you from personal experience (from having to use one to widen the slots, when I was el broko) that you can use a nail file in a pinch to do the job. Take your time, don't crank down hard hard on the slots with the nail file, and make sure you file evenly on both sides of the slot. It works pretty good.

i have not widened the nut slots. I don't do much in the way of bends but it doens't seem to be binding much, if at all. Honestly nut filing intimidates me in general, but I should probably learn at some point. Maybe i'll get a black tusq nut. who knows!

I noticed that your strings are riding pretty tight in the nut (hence the question). As long as you don't have tuning issues (such tune-up being a pain), then you're good to go.
