HNPD - Xotic EP Boost

ya totally a people person. Here is some sad irony.. I'm not real friendly to other peoples kids but of course I love my own like nothing else. Its a guy thing in general I think but Paul is such a gentleman that he will actually take the time to address my kids like they "matter". My 15 yr old while bored a bit with all my rockabilly and bakersfield honkey tonk LOVES Paul Pigat and Reverend Horton Heat. Its a lesson for myself, this guy is
the real deal. I know it sounds like I am "touting" him as epic because he uses my preamp but this is just not the case.

Well, we know from first hand experience that he is a great guy and an incredible musician. We'll probably be having him back in the next few months either by the end of the year or at NAMM again....maybe you can come hang and talk pedals and stuff since you're in Riverside!

I've got no horse in this race but the feedback that I've read from anyone who has compared the pedals comments that while they are similar designs/circuits, they are different sounding pedals with the Xotic having more gain in the signal and adding more color to the tone. Just sayin they aren't necessarily identical pedals.

Clinch even mentions this on his page:

Please Note:
There appears to be some confusion about similarities between the EP-PRE and competitive products that claim to be Echoplex Preamps. The EP-PRE and one of the competitive pedals share similar cosmetics and are both based on a Common Source JFET stage, however that’s where the similarity ends!

As I and others have stated on forums, the EP-PRE is a faithful reproduction of the preamp section of the Echoplex EP-3, complete with a power supply that is close to 20V DC, high output impedance and passive level control. At this point in time, many competing products claiming to be “Echoplex Preamp” have very little in common with the original Echoplex design.

Amen and Amen... Nun_with_guitar-255x255.jpg

So IOW, if their circuit designs have very little in common, you could conclude they either did a pretty crappy job of stealing his circuit or they didn't actually steal it in the first place.

They have very little in common meaning XOTIC is a nice marketing concept (no one is arguing they dont sound like a very nice transistor based boost) but if you would like to have an actual recreation of an original maestro echoplex's preamp.. Clinch has/had this and Xotic has taken from this. just look at the box design of Clinch and then look at what Xotic "gleaned"

ps.. obviously there are now new directions for Clinch (just checked the site) as they've come up with the EP+
smart move to stay in business

It was quite some time before Xotic decided to pilfer the hard work of Clinch FX. Clinch was ready to start shipping their Echo plex preamp about the time I was finishing up R&D with my 301Space echo preamp.

I'd get the Clinch Pre in a second if it was less expensive. Hell, I'd build one if there were a kit version. WANT.

Actually both circuits are different. The Clinch Pre is the EP front end while Xotic has added a couple of tone switches, a different FET bias and the output stage is a emitter follower (buffer). While the purpose is the same, the two circuits are only the same with the shared FET input.

The interesting dynamic of the FET input is that the famed Dumble OD circuit is based on the same idea.

I prefer the RE301 space echo's preamp for my old fender amps and ac30/trainwreck.. boosts have their place but a good preamp between the pkups
and the amplifier are a dynamics game changer IMO. ...and yes Dumble putting a solid state preamp inside the amp gives a big knod to why his amps
have that "Thing" so many pedal builders try to recreate

just wanted to say I don't understand 3/4 of what you guys are talking about

I actually do understand, but I don't care... I just like to play guitar, and have come to realize that I sound the same no matter what I play through... Shitty...

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

awesome.

I play in H.
so does Mr Inferno

we used to write mostly in Q, but that 9th string was a nuisance

Yea, punk rockers don't get too caught up in chasing tone or theory...

I think that is a cliche' or sterotyped misnomer.. if that were so true why does Tim Armstrong use a nice mesa boogie amp and period correct gretsch guitar?
Why does Trever of Face to Face use an even more boutique Tophat amplifier? Why do Greg and Brett of Bad religion use custom Les Pauls, Tom Anderson guitars and vintage marshall amps? They are professional musicians that take their art and tone/rigs seriously. They depend on them and they have crafted their own sound that they embrace and nuture.
