Lay Down Candles

Gary Blanchard

beloved, local musician
I just learned that Melanie Safka, better known as Melanie, died yesterday. While her most played song was the regrettable Brand New Key, she wrote and performed many beautiful and powerful songs, especially in the early 70s. Lay Down Candles in the Rain, inspired by her experience performing at Woodstock, was my introduction to her. Other songs that were popular were There’s a Chance Peace Will Come, The Nickel Song, Look What They've Done to my Song, and Ring the Living Bells. My favorite album of hers was The Good Book. I still will play the title song at gigs now and then.

Melanie was a hippie icon back in the day. She will be missed, but her music lives on.
