Listen to this - New Wilco album coming out

Sounds like someone's out of ideas!

Not a bad song but not very memorable. And if that's the lead single...

It’s cool that Jeff didn’t die, but I kinda wish he’d gobble some pills and make googly eyes at Jim O’Rourke while rewriting old Pavement songs again.

Seems pretty pastiche-y. Don’t sound bad, but that’s not surprising given that everyone involved is pro, pro, pro.

Lacks the bone-deep country feels of lived experience of fantasy melodrama. A bit better at ticking the “indie dude made a country record” boxes than, say, David Berman’s Purple Mountains album. But fuck if this song doesn’t nail the sad bastard George Jones emotions (vocal approach be damned).

That’s a decent summary of Wilco.

The more Radiohead they got, the less memorable the tunes. I would’ve expected an effort that is more traditional in approach to be more memorable. After listening to this track again, the lyrics aren’t quite there. It’s like they were trying to write a hit and didn’t quite reach it and the phaser on the electric guitar. Just because Waylon did it back in the day, doesn’t mean it’s ok for you to do it as well.

Still love the baritone guitar.

Professional and entertaining aren’t necessarily memorable. For better and/or worse. I probably wouldn’t hesitate to go see them again.

And yeah, I don’t know. Never been crazy about the Radiohead comparison. Maybe a very conservative and less literate version of Sonic Youth that’s never stopped trying to please the songwriter’s circle crowd.

Around the 8:30 mark he shows off his crazy cool doubleneck Jerry Jones: Top neck 12 string, bottom neck baritone.

I'll listen to it a few times when I stumble across it at the library.
I'm on my first listen. I don't know what makes songwriters decide that it's everyone else's responsibility to figure out what the hell they're writing about, but it's not for me.

I’ve not made it through the whole thing. (It’s not for me either). But as for your question about songwriters, the most obvious answer is the fork in the road with roots-adjacent American music where some people followed Hank and some people followed Bob and the rules and expectations got more and more polarized. Tweedy, in particular, seems to opt for the Neil Young variation of the Dylanesque.

And Tweedy has demonstrated pretensions in the realm of contemporary poetry previously so that is probably a factor. And he and clearly remains enamored of the Dead and all their shagginess. It’s not like he’s become a tidier, sharper songwriter over the years. It’s been a long long time since Being There and Summerteeth.

It took me a while, but I’ve really warmed to this album. It is packed with greatness.

Maybe you just have to spin it on a long boring drive with a head full of delta-9 THC like I do.

Certainly nothing groundbreaking, but it puts off a nice Cali Cowboy vibe. Bit o Burritos, bit o Bakersfield.
I certainly prefer it over the more artsy/ experimental Wilco but thats just my personal taste.
I liked it well enough I'll make a point to give the whole record a listen.
