Gig Report: Open Mic

Deep Eddy

Argle Bargle or Foofaraw?
Not really a gig, but close enough. I played my first open mic tonight. I promised myself that I would play an open mic before I turned 50. Mission Accomplished with less than 1 month to spare. :)

I was pretty nervous before hand, but once I got on stage I was fine. I played Lucky Now by Ryan Adams and Feel Alright by Steve Earle. And it felt alright.

This bar is almost always filled with good players and singers, so it was a little intimidating, but everyone there is really nice and supportive. Lots of folks went out of their way to stop me and and compliment my performance.

Can't wait for the next one.

This!!!

Keep doing them Deep Eddy. This will help you push your playing to a new level.

Thanks. I will definitely keep doing it.

I've played on stage with a group of people several times, but this is the first time it was just me and a guitar. For me, this has a very different feel since there is no one else (or other instruments) to hide behind. The "stakes" feel higher.

BTW, Lucky Now is clearly a winner with the ladies.

Yeah playing by yourself in front of a crowd is very different. However you no longer rely on someone else for a missed part of mistake - you just push on. I personally have found it most rewarding as you yourself are now in control of your destiny.

And the biggest plus - The only drama you deal with now is Me (Id), Myself (Ego) and I (Superego)

Right on. I have played hundreds of gigs, but an open mic is something I would never do. Well, what I think an open mic is, just me singing and playing an acoustic guitar. I don't really play acoustic and I am probably the worst singer on the planet.

I can front my band at 8 in the morning stone sober without a problem, but I still get nervous as hell playing by myself in front of people. Good for you.

Thanks. There was a point in the day where I started feeling the nerves and seriously considered not doing it. It was the old "well, it can wait to next week." :)

Thankfully, a friend was playing that same night, so I knew that I couldn't back out. Once I was there, it was fine (although, about 10 mins before it was my turn to play, I suddenly could not remember the words to one of the songs).
