Preamp problems

So I'm trying to use a Presonus digimax D8 as a slave to a Profire 2626, but I can't get it to sync. I've connected the ADAT cable and the BNC word clock cable, and set the Profire as master and Presonus as slave, but I'm still getting that crackling sound from the Presonus.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I used to get cracking from my Presonus Firepod if I hadn't recently rebooted the computer. That's probably different from your issue, though.

I have a Digimax slaved to my Digi 003. I'll take a look when I get into work and see if I remember how I set it up. Do you have to set a clock speed? or pick a sampling rate? I can't recall. IIRC I need to run my whole rig at 48k or 44.1 because the Digimax isn't 96k like the Digi 003.

I did try rebooting the computer, but no dice. I'm a real noob when it comes to studio work, so rebooting was my only solution

I'm not sure about setting a clock speed - both manuals I've read seem to indicate that the BNC word clock cable does that for you. I do have to set the sampling rate though, because the Presonus isn't as fast as the Profire. I should double check that though, because I can't remember if I set it for 48k or 44.1.

Thanks Mark!

no problem....I set mine up two years ago and haven't had to think about it since then....

I double-checked the sampling rate yesterday - both are set at 48 kHz. But it's the same problem. When I set the Digimax to "external", the light flashes, and there is no input at all into the Profire.

hmm...I don't know. Is there a Presonus support forum? If it's a common issue you might find an answer there....

I found a solution, and thought I would post it here in case anyone else has the same problem. I had to slave the Profire to the Presonus - it wouldn't work the other way around. On top of that, I had to set it to sync through the ADAT lightpipe, rather than the BNC word clock cable, because the word clock sync wouldn't work.

These machines are temperamental little buggers!

Glad you figured it out.

I use a Presonus Firestudio, and was forced to use the internal clock instead of clocking to my Apogee Rosetta 800 (theoretically, I should be able to clock from my Apogee, but whatever). I've also had intermittent troubles with sync to my computer. They are temperamental little buggers. I've heard nothing but good things about RME, although they are noticeably more expensive, and may go that route if I have continued problems with Presonus.

That said, for a cheap-ass little device, the Firestudio has surprisingly good converters. I rarely use them because I have the Apogee, but it's nice to know that the converters work pretty well on the Presonus.
