RIP Michael Collins

Damn, I read his biography a few years back. Out of the 3 of them he's definitely the one you'd want to have a beer with.

I'm still fascinated by the fact at one point he was the furthest away anyone had been from another person in history.

He was the real thing.

My favorite anecdote from Carrying the Fire is that Collins was put in charge of spacesuit design. The biggest problem they had with spacesuits at the time was urine leakage from the collection device (essentially a condom with a tube on the end). Collins identified the problem: the collection devices were available in small, medium, and large. He had them renamed large, extra large, and magnum (or some such).

Fire is probably the best of the Apollo memoirs, and possibly the best astronaut memoir.

"We had chairs set up for him to sit for the demonstration – but he insisted to be at the same level as the students. He was incredible."
