Signature Guitars?

I've got no beef with 'em. I played a Jeff Beck strat at a shop once and it felt really nice. I could see owning that. In general, I don't like paying extra dough for cosmetic features and fiddly stuff, so that makes it less likely that I'd get one (at least on purpose).

I have a LTD Hammet signature model I got when I was 16

I regret this purchase and really really wish I had that to spend again

do you regret it because it says "Hammet" on it, or do you regret it because of the style of guitar?

neither actually, its a good silly metaller, skull and cross inlays, EMGs, could do with a proper floyd if I could be bothered to get round to it.

I regret it because it was insanely overpriced considering that you can get the same thing sans inlays for such a lot less money but I was foolish and blinkered in my youth and didnt bother putting any thought into it or shop around or look what else I could get. you'll notice Ive mentioned the money in both posts but not posted a figure, its embarrasing, why did I have money when I couldnt spend it well and now I'd be willing to do the job right I can't scrape together half of what I spent then.

I think thats what would keep me from most sig guitars nowadays, you're paying a lot lot more for the name compared to the features.

that's how they get you.

and as SN said above, it's why my guitars are rather plain in general. fancy tops, inlays, and gold hardware don't make for a better playing or sounding instrument.

those I dont mind when done right, thing is, if there was an LTD guitar, with this exact spec but that had nothing to do with KH it would cost half what it does.

I blame a lot of my shit guitar buying/owning experiences on being a lefty but in a lot of cases its right, I just can't walk into a store with an amount of money to spend in mind and see if anything grabs me because, on a good day, my choices are a ÂŁ100 strat copy or a ÂŁ3000 les paul

...for me it all depends...if the only thing "signature" about it is the fellas name somewhere on the guitar, then I dont see the point...but if it is an actual custom design (like the Gilmour Strat, the Sonic Youth Jazzmasters, the Alex Lifeson Les Paul, the Jimmy Page Les Paul (both of them)...then I can see the use...personally, the Gilmour strat and the Jimmy Page Les Paul are exactly how I would want a strat and Les Paul to be...without the price though...

Also, very few of my personal fav guitarists/artists are the sorts of folks who get sig gear deals. J. Mascis has a sig Jazzmaster, but it's basswood and the pickups are reportedly wonky and the cosmetics are kinda special. Billy Corgan has a sig strat. I've actually tried one. Felt decent (basic hardtail strat with '70s styling). The custom pickups are supposedly where the appeal lies, but they're fairly high gain pickups and not the sort of thing I typically have a need for.

The Sonic Youth Jazzblaster thing does seem appealing. But still, not something I'm actively lusting for.

in other words, it's an ugly piece of shit.

If you prefer to be uncharitable.

Sidenote: Given the crazy popularity of the Fender offset-style guitars and Fender's rush to put out budgety versions (like the Mascis), I'm wondering if their popularity is gonna wane.

that thing is almost as ugly as the paisley tele. almost.

i dunno if popularity is going to wane. the MIM versions they're putting out now are far better than the 90s MIJ versions. i think that as long as Fender is putting out quality guitars, people will respond.

I love the J. Mascis. Still wish I had picked up the cheapie I found.

You and I often have similar taste in oddball guitars, but I think it's kinda fugly. It works for J. because purple is his fav color (I believe) and he has a kinda fugly slacker chic thing happening. Its one of those things that's just too tied to one person that I'd feel like a fool with it. Plus--according to the offset guitar nerds--the pickups are not all that Jazzmastery.

I can see that. I've fiddled around on a number of Fender and Squier items recently that were all pretty fun to play. Got myself a Classic Vibe '50s strat. It's quite possibly better than my old MIM standard. More resonant. Nicer finish. Pickups don't sound like moist darial. Neck is really easy to get around on.
