I can't decide whether to call this "pessimistic optimism" or "optimistic pessimism" so I decided to call the whole thing off...

...I can't understand why no one is complaining about the needless and undeserved torture she put the monitor wedge through in her pursuit of rock and roll cliché display...but that's just me...

In any case, I basically agree with Ethan. It is silly in this day and age.

This Ethan guy said the exact opposite of what I said in the other post. And I basically explained my take into the other thread hours ago. You guys want me to go door to door explaining why a bunch of old dude pearl-clutching, pointing-out-the-obvious, tut-tut takes are bad? Mark Wein isn’t paying me enough.
 
Also, that Ethan guy is just flat out wrong to posit rock and/or roll as somehow anti-capitalist or involved in class struggle. It’s like he never read a book and totally missed the gag behind the Sex Pistols.
 
I have never been a fan of guitar smashing, but what are the chances that ya'll would be talking about her right now if she hadn't done that? And if enough people click in to watch her smash a guitar maybe some folks will also listen to her music and become fans. All part of the business, and like it or not, music is now a business,

Music has been a business for a long time.

In the 1700s, “one sheets” we’re sold at public executions. These were songs that told the story of the murder, trial, etc. Because they didn’t keep people on death row for years, the songs had to be completed and printed really quickly. Lots of borrowing from other songs happened. It’s neat to see how the songs evolved over time.

Basically the more shocking and sensational the more you’d sell.

To be fair...

This guy is a music prof.

But this debate has nothing to do with music, really, and everything to do with theatrics. Which happens, of course, to be my academic specialty.

He’s saying it’s old, that it’s lame, but he just fell right into the trap: he’s ranting about it just like they did a half-century ago.

It’s like saying that the cups-and-balls routine is old hat, and then keep betting on the ball being in the cup on the right.
