7 months or so was James taking time off for "personal reasons".

As well, a lot of that time was Bob Rock and Lars moving stuff around in ProTools so they could end up with something halfway usable.
A lot of them were pieced together using random parts from loads of jam sessions. And you can tell.

Still one of the most unpleasant sounding albums ever released. AJFA didn't sound a whole lot better, but at least had some decent songs on it.

The last album/CD from Metallica I got was the Black Album. I didn't care much for anything they did after that. St. Anger was them trying to be part of the Nu-metal shit, but with their own spin on it. It sucked donkey dicks IMO, and it sounded like Lars was playing on trash cans.
