Does it make sense?

take example A: a single diner goes to a place and oders the most expensive steak and eggs on the menu along with two doubleshot latte's and a jumbo sticky bun...his total is 30 dollars and his tip at 15% comes to 4.50...

Example B: 4 diners come in and each oders the 1.99 breakfast special and each has special requests. One diner wants his eggs served slightly runny but not runny, the second diner wants grits instead of hashbrowns and he wants a smidgeon of butter not margarine on the side, the third wants an additional spoon but a large one and not a regular size and the fourth wants their toast burnt and three straws ..one for thir water and one for stirring their coffee and one for sucking the egg yolk off the plate.,,.,.their total comes to 12.50 (only one coffee, the rest just had water) their tip comes to 1.87 cents


so in the scenario above which table did the waiter have to work harder at? which table paid a higher tip?

Do the results make sense?

I always try to tip for their time, not just a percentage. Most of the time, the percentage works out, but I just don’t blindly accept it. Also, 20% unless the service sucked and it was obviously the server’s fault.
I never let the debit/credit machine determine the tip without at least verifying it.
- not that I don’t trust the math. More because if there was any kind of coupon or gift card applied, the machine usually calculates the tip on the net total and not the gross. Plus, if the server did a good job, I’ll tip more.

That said, yeah, a proper wage would be a better system.


Also, where the hell can I get a sit-down breakfast for a $1.99?
Then again, would I want to eat it?
$4.99 is probably the best price I can think of that is available around here.

This. Exactly this. And the standard tip became about 20% a while back. And if you’re out and about in Covid times, tip even harder. People are risking life and limb for your chimichanga, Deebo.

But mostly in small off the beaten path towns where the locals are farmers and old guys who get upset when they see prices higher than what they became accustomed to in the Eisenhower era.

A lot of taquerias in Chicago would do a < $5 incredibly cheap breakfast special in the before times, but I think all that has died off as high volume indoor dining has died.

Before touchless payments were such a big thing, I’d try to tip cash even when I was using a card to pay the bill. Unless it was on my expense account.

I tipped the guy at the dispensary 2 dollars and change because he was out of what i asked for so i asked him what else he had in that range and he had to walk like 4 steps, open a drawer and then he laid out two choices and told me what they were...so i tipped him and he thanked me.....perhaps the food server should carry a jar b ecause with a jar you don't feel obliged to give a certain amount, you can just drop your change in there like 22 cents or whatever.

my dad still gets the newspaper delivered and he said the carrier enclosed a Christmas card WITH a return envelope....clearly the envelope was soliciting a tip, for what doing the job he is getting paid for. he (according to my dad) doesn't place the newspaper anywhere special, just tosses it by the sidewalk.

You have obviously never been a server. This is ridiculous on it's face. Servers/bartenders who are any good make far more on tips than any hourly rate. The only people pushing for this are unions, the government, and people who have no idea what they are taking about. I made between $300 and $400 a night on average for a 3.5-4 hour shift and that was 20 plus years ago. Servers that work for my wife average the same at a Bob Evans. If the7 try this hourly garbage you just won't have any servers. It would be a drastic pay cut. No-one worth a shit would even take those jobs, and any one who did will be bottom of the barrel.
