The World Cup Thread

Figured it'd be a good thing to have. I've been having fun seeing some of the posts from Europeans about their American experience outside of the stadiums. Apparently this guy Freddy from Germany has gained quite a following on X with his posts about Waffle House, Walmart and Buc-ees.

Kansas City and Dallas are the closest locations hosting World Cup near me. I’m slightly interested, but too cheap to lay out the money for tickets, travel, hotel, etc. I’ll watch some of it on TV and maybe visit a pub to experience a fraction of the vibe.

I’ve never been to a Buc-ees, but my wife is a fan. The closest location to us is in Berthoud, CO. I’ve heard through the grapevine that they have excellent fudge. They’re trying to build one near us. Many of the locals are fighting against it, but my wife is crossing her fingers that it happens.

I have not been to an Awful House in years, but I have fond memories from my younger days, going there with friends late at night, or early in the morning. My son and his friends sometimes go there late, so the tradition continues.

I’m guilty of shopping at Walmart. The alternative where I live would be going to multiple stores, some far away, to get all the things I need. For example, the local Staples store closed, and Walmart carries office supplies. I shop at the local PetSmart when I can, but they don’t carry all the pet products I prefer, and Walmart is open 2-4 hours later, depending on the day. Our local Walmart does not seem to attract the exotic Walmartians that other locations attract. Perhaps, we’re missing out on the full Walmart experience.

Attended a game in 94 and worked the 99 WWC Bay Area venues but will be watching this one at Madison Square Livingroom. I'm going for Curaçao, Cape Verde, and Norway as well (of course) as the USMNT. I am also dying to see how Scotland do.

Even though I'm (Northern) Irish, and neither of the Irish teams got in (either of which I would've supported), I've been living in Scotland since 1988, so very much have a vested interest in this.

Also, hilariously, a lot of Irish people end up kind of supporting the Ivory Coast, on account of their flag.

I saw on the news that two teams landed, and were then subjected to body searches and sniffer dogs etc, all filmed too.

The USA really does roll out the red carpet for its guests!

Meh.

There's a 50% chance I'll set my alarm for the Scotland game tomorrow and a 5% chance that if I do, I'll actually get up to watch the game instead of rolling over.

Watched the Canada-Bosnia game last night, and the USA-Paraguay game this morning.

Canada-Bosnia felt like watching some 2nd division relegation shitshow. Both teams have no business at the WC...

USA was alright, they got a lot of physicality and energy, and if they get to put pressure further up the field they can control the game pretty well. They seem vulnerable as soon as the opponent manages to play out from under the pressure though. Paraguay was absolutely tragic, I hope they just had an off day or something, even when not under pressure they barely managed a pass to a friendly player... Mental slidings in places where there was absolutely no need, stupid commitments to defensive blocks and such in places where it was way too risky...

We have a Buc-ees in Pontiac Il. It's 5 miles closer to us than Kankabourbaly, Kankakee, Bradley and Bourbonais. We almost never go to Pontiac except for doctors because, our insurance steers us there instead of Kankakee. But we only drive through Pontiac on the way to Bloomington. The Doctors do technically have an office in Pontiac that they are almost never at.

Buc-ees is fun to visit and the food is better than you expect from a gas station but, not that much better.

I won't be watching the world cup. I watch the NFL, none of the other American sports interest me either. Only other spots I can think of that I like is some of the summer olympics.

EDIT- We went to Bloomington today to visit middle child and shop for a dress for wife, for middle child's wedding. We could see the Buc-ees sign half a mile away, where we get onto I55 and I started telling wife about talking about the Buc-ees here. She said, it's not a Buc-ees, it's a Wally's. Oops. As usual, she was right.

I watch because my eldest son is a huge fan of soccer. He follows leagues around the world.
He was a goal tender in high school. He has quality insight into the games. I hope he coaches one day.

I think one of the coolest things they do is to walk out on the pitch hand and hand with the children. It must be a awesome experience for a young child.

Trying not to get political here, but politics is why I've never had this little interest in a World Cup before. Despite this is the first time Norway has qualified since 1998 - and we could even go quite far in the tournament. But the combination of Donald and Infantino (Corruptus Maximus)....yikes.
That's not what the World Cup is supposed to be about.

I'll watch our games, but probably not much more than that.

Having people round for a BBQ tomorrow and I've Inadvertently stayed up late enough prepping dishes that the Scotland game is on.

I'm not that invested in the national team for various reasons but I'll try and stay up.as I'm pals with Kenny McLean and he'll hopefully get on.

Goal tender?!?!? :embarrassed:

I’m still upset with FIFA and Nashville’s Gaylord Entertainment for shafting me and my fellow volunteer performers when we participated in the opening ceremonies in Chicago in 1994. Started off as an offer of free tix then it became a watch party and then it became a terrible box lunch in the condemned section of Soldier Field and GTFO.

And then I got home and just wanted to crash and watch teevee and the fucking White Bronco Chase was all over fucking television boring the shit out of me.

Soccer can get fucked.
