4 Killed in 170 MPH Car Crash After Traffic Stop
https://www.thedailybeast.com/4-killed-in-170-mph-car-crash-after-georgia-traffic-stop

A Dodge Charger that sped away from a traffic stop and tore down a Georgia highway at 170 miles per hour crashed minutes later on an exit ramp and burst into flames, killing four men inside.

Two other occupants of the car—where three guns were found—were injured in the horrific crash on I-75 in Monroe County, 11Alive reported.

Authorities said a deputy tried to pull over the Charger early Sunday because it was going more than 100 miles per hour.

i guess my point is that NO ONE needs a 500+ horsepower car.
i don't care what the fucking public wants or will pay for.
there comes a point where the manufacturers need to grow a pair and act with the public's safety in mind.
just stop making these damn things.
or, how about the government steps in, like seat belts, etc. and makes it illegal to build cars with this much power.

plenty of advocacy groups are trying to make gun manufacturers responsible for gun deaths, how about we start holding GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc. responsible for high speed crashes and deaths.

if that car only had 300 HP in it, there's no way it would have got to 170 mph.
YMMV

I agree to a point, but even at 125 mph which a 300hp car can easily do, you can be very dead in an accident.
It's not usually the horsepower that gets them in trouble, it's the illusion of control that again, can be had at lower horsepower and speed and still be deadly.

The same idiot that's going to hurl themselves into some stationary object in a charger, going entirely too fast for conditions, is going to do it in a clapped out 1998 honda civic.

ok, 200 HP, or whatever.

yes, but that did not come from the factory that way, and would take $$ and effort to get a honda to go that kind of speed.
i'm not saying that if the car makers would stop making cars with that kind of power, it wouldn't exist anymore.
i'm saying there is no good reason to make a car that you could get in, turn the key and go 200.
especially without some kind of mandatory racing school training and special license required.

you can't go into a sporting goods store and walk out with a 50 cal machine gun, for a good reason.

lol. I'm not arguing with you. My point is that limiting the HP is not the end all answer. Hell, look at electric cars. They have no engine and are faster than almost anything else on the road.
What is the answer? I certainly don't know. I agree that idiots get behind the wheel of a 3000lb death missile and do stupid things. How do you stop that?

Top speed or potential top speed isn't really the issue. Any car sold today is capable of going far in excess of safe conditions that will result in a catastrophic accident.

I see these guys wad up all sorts of cheap low HP cars into telephone poles or other cars when they're street racing often enough.

I made mention of this the other day here where we have people who get these cars that basically drive themself when it comes to the horse power. The computer brain in the car slips the clutch or clutches in some cases to prevent traction loss with hard acceleration. Cars with 700 hp will spin the tires effortlessly at basically any speed without this help. Problem is they don’t help you to stop or corner any faster. As in the case here there is no where to practice hard stops at 170mph. This the steering wheel holder wrecks when the oh shit barrier is reached.

I remember back in 69 my dad talking with a family friend who had a green road runner. Had it less than a year and was selling it because he couldn’t afford to insure it.

The can have my 500+ hp car when they pry it from my cold, dead...uh....right foot.

It is a matter of responsibilities and personal choices. These asshats could have killed themselves in a similar manner doing 120 in a Camry or minivan.

Insurance companies will just continue to increase their rates on SRT Demons (808 HP) and Hellcats (717 HP).

For what its worth, I got up to 135 MPH in a 914 2.0 liter (120 cu-in) and it had only 95 HP/116 lb-ft torque.

Charger, harrumph...

Nah.... idiots be idiots at any horsepower. I do agree that whether it's a car or a weapon, if you can afford to buy it, you should be responsible enough to register it and have appropriate training and insurance to use it appropriately and legally, in BOTH cases.

A 500 hp BMW with traction control and 4 wheel antilock can stop and/or avoid an accident in the hands of a responsible driver WAY faster than the guy in the 180 hp Chevy pickup truck that is jacked up on oversized "mudder" tires, soft bouncy suspension that "gives better off road performance" but is being driven at 90 down a 2 lane road and passing a prius and billowing black smoke to "own a tree-hugging lib".

And not to bring everyone down, but to underscore the harsh reality.... a friend of mine just lost his 22 year old daughter this weekend who was the passenger on a snowmobile that hit a parked car in a subdivision, and neither rider had a helmet on.
