Uh oh...

DNW

BREAUX
... I think I may have just joined a band.

Have been out of bands for a few years now. Just got sick of dealing with everyone's crap and no one else pulling their weight. But I saw the ad for this band and it sounded a bit too interesting to just ignore.

Apparently they want to take their existing duo...
http://www.goyim.com.au/
... and basically make it metal.

I've actually seen their duo before briefly, just by chance, and they were pretty nifty. Band will be the duo on their instruments, plus a drummer, vocalist and guitarist. Could be interesting. Certainly will be something different from all the usual copycat melodic death metal bands and other assorted generic crap we get down here. :thu:

Spoke to the guy just before and we seem to be on pretty much the same page with a lot of stuff. Will be heading over for a bit of a test jam tomorrow night. :)

SHIT... I'm joining a band again.

Yeah, if I end up joining it'll certainly be interesting to see what comes out of it. Knowing that they've been doing their gypsy thing for a while as a duo and are pretty nifty at it makes me a bit more confident they know what they want to do and that it'll actually be something a bit different sounding. Rather than a lot of the other crap around here where people will say they want to do something different, and then you look at their list of "influences" and it's all the same ol' generic metal shite.

And when I spoke to the guy, he seemed to be keen on trying different things and experimenting. To start with, just to get a feel for things, the guitar is probably mostly going to be helping to drive the rhythmic side of things. Once we're getting a better feel for what we're doing though, things could open right up. :)

Still... I feel a bit like Withnail. "I've joined a band by accident!" :embarrassed:

Will do. :)

For now it's just gonna be a low volume jam, so I'll be fine just dragging my Axe-FX rack over with the nearfield monitors. If it all goes ahead, I'll probably just buy one of those Atomic FRFR wedges. The plan is to keep volume minimal, especially with the two of them on their acoustic instruments. Wedge on its side as a normal amp for rehearsals, and live everything'd pretty much be straight to FOH so it'd just sit on the floor in front as my own guitar monitor, everything else can come through the house monitors. Nice 'n' quite 'n' controllable. :)

Apparently the loudest thing at rehearsals so far is the vocalist, and he's been complaining that he never gets to properly let loose.

Actually this is probably the perfect gig for the AxeFX...

Actually this is probably the perfect gig for the AxeFX...

Yeah, a few years back I just got fed up with being in bands, so about 2.5 years ago I bought the Axe and sold off pretty much everything else. I've got no big loud amp gear anymore, just a few FX pedals left over that I haven't wanted to sell.

So I was a bit worried that if they were really keen to be up and running, and basically had everything else ready and were just waiting to find the right guitarist, that this might be a problem. Coz right now I don't really have the money to be buying loud amp gear, and if it was going to be a properly loud band I'm not even sure a single Atomic would have handled it. Which would have meant more money on either another Atomic, or maybe looking at louder powered monitors or even running it through a more traditional poweramp and guitar cab set up.

But as it turns out, it'll pretty much be the perfect bit of gear for it. They basically want to get the biggest sound possible while keeping our band volume to a minimum.

So tonight'll just be a couple of guitars, a 4U rack and a couple of nearfield monitors. Much easier than when I had to move a 4x12, a heavy 4U rack, and an even heavier 6U rack. :)

Tube gear is great! *shakes fist*

Well, 1:15am, only got home from the jam about half an hour ago.

Wow... that was what I would call a colossal mindfuck!

I mean, I knew it'd be a bit of a challenge, but I can tell I'll definitely be pushing pretty hard to keep up with those two. Technically I don't think I'll have a problem, and anything I can't quite play will just take a bit of metronome work. But some of the rhythms, the chord changes, the structures of things... It seemed like their brains were just working on a higher level. Both very impressive on their instruments (Esther ripped it up on the violin as if she'd just been told her arms were being cut off the following day), and they seem to have that great non-verbal musical connection when they're playing.

But, they were cool people, easy to get along with, very open to doing things differently. Bit of a slow start musically (well, for me at least :embarrassed:), but towards the end we'd worked on some stuff and made some progress. There was a rhythm that was even fucking them up, and we busted the metronomes out and finally figured out WTF was going on.

I did slightly shit myself when they dropped sheet music in front of me at the start of the night though. :embarrassed: "Err... I haven't been able to sight read, or even read music since I was like... 12 years old or something." But they were cool with that, and if anything they want to get away from what they've got written on paper anyway and just jam the stuff out and figure out what works best. Whatever needs to be changed will be changed. :)

So they were pretty happy with how things went, saw that I could play, saw that I would actually put the effort in. So no doubt we'll be getting together for more jamming soon. :)

Am definitely thinking that even if I can't read music, I'm definitely going to have to notate the stuff in whatever way I can understand.

On a slightly sillier note... while I was moving my Axe-FX 'n' whatnot from my rack sleeve to a rack case last night, I set my hair on fire.

Thats pretty killer.

How did you set you hair on fire?

Yeah, it'll be a big challenge to really get comfortable with it, but I think it'll be an interesting and enjoyable challenge. Looking forward to really getting stuck into it. :)

And yeah, essentially what I did was I lit a candle and then stuck my hair in it.

I had a candle sitting on top of one of my monitors... next to where my rack sleeves sit on the desk. Had to spin the top sleeve around to disconnect everything and move it to the rack case. Oh, it won't turn around coz of some of the stuff that's plugged in. Ok, I'll just have a look around the back to see what's going on... wait... what's that fizzing sound? And what's that smell?

*turn around to see smoke*

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK!!!

Still, it was less disturbing than the time I got out of someone's car, closed the door, and then just as they started driving off realised part of my hair was caught in the door. FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKSTOPTHEFUCKINGCARFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK!!

Well, just had the 2nd jam tonight, still just me and the duo. Spent about 8 hours today working on stuff and we're making some decent progress.

It's certainly forcing me to quickly get better at finding my way around the fretboard on the fly. :embarrassed:
A7, D7, A7, D, A7, D, Ddim, F#7, Bm... ok, looks easy enough. What, you want me to try play it up high and make it sound kinda silly? Ok, that changes things a bit... Wait, it's how fast? Shit, we're starting already? Well, fuck a duck! :embarrassed:

At least I'm not the only one struggling with some of this stuff and making mistakes. We had a good 20 minute argument about triplets at one point. I won.

I'm glad I don't have long hair anymore :embarrassed:

I just had a listen on their site... Cool music, for sure... I'm looking forward to hearing some with your guitar...

lol.

I'm glad I don't have long hair anymore :embarrassed:

It's been waist-length for years... doesn't seem to be growing anymore, but it's been a good 10 years or so since I had it cut at all. If I ever start going bald, I'll just comb it over. :embarrassed:

Well, you say that now, but... :embarrassed:

But yeah, sometimes it's cool just to lock into a simple rhythm so I can just sit there and listen to them do their thing.

I've also discovered something handy. If I ask the bassist what he's doing, he then has to stop and think about it (he usually pretty much goes auto-pilot, having played the stuff a million times before), and then while he's doing that, at some point usually an argument starts between the two of them about what works better... buying me time to figure out WTF is going on.
