Undeniably great songs

When my friends and I had this conversation in high school, we concluded that the best candidate would be the catalog of James Brown.
 
I once decided to cover I Wanna Be Somebody by WASP as a country song and was shocked by how well it translates to country, or acoustic folk.

It's really a well crafted song underneath all the bombast.
 
Always On My Mind. Any song that would take more effort to make a bad version of is great in my book and that's one of them.
 


I think the lyrical tweaks in the first verses of the Lauper version smarten things up a bit, but the song is recognizably excellent even in the original punkier version. Clever. Catchy. The right mix of salty and sweet to hit that pop song pathos sweet spot.

 
Just a couple of mad drunk guys from the scheme but they've write some absolutely banging tunes.
