Was Gene Simmons of Kiss a decent bassist?

To be fair, despite the fact that he is a detestable human being, he was a serviceable, basic bassist...which was all that music needed him to be...

Apparently, he concentrated his demon powers on marketing, rather than bass chops. He may have been an average bass player, but he was relentless in his business dealings.

In the music industry being relentless can be the difference between generational wealth and homelessness. I wish I was as good at business as Gene and Paul.

Some of his bass lines are iconic. I had more than a couple bassists in my teens come up to me asking how I played Detroit Rock City so smoothly. There are a few others that do the job of providing movement to support the chord progressions rather well indeed. And I was Made For Loving You is a lot of work. He got very lazy in the eighties when his business sense became all encompassing.
