The singer in one of my old country bands knew John Wesley Harding. I sort of remember when he sat in with us one night in the mid 90s and sang a few old chestnuts.

That's pretty cool! Did you ever listen to the great Roky Erickson tribute album Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye? There were some heavy hitters on that (REM, ZZ Top, JAMC, Butthole Surfers etc.) but I reckon the two best covers on the album were the John Wesley Harding and the Judybats ones.
He also wrote a literary prize-winning novel of which I have never read a word, but for which the top Goodreads review opines:
"Did you ever wonder what Dickens would be like if there was more gender confusion and hand jobs? Well if you did then this novel could put your mind at rest."
I should give it a go.

He's a really good guitarist! Many years ago I spent quite a bit of time learning one of his original instrumentals called 'Swingin' Down the Alamo'. It was a pretty challenging fast-paced western swing thing, in a Junior Barnard style. I never got the whole solo down, but I still throw bits of it into my playing from time to time.

Last night was reading blues history and listened to the following. Article attributed Mamie Smith kicking off the love affair we continue to have today. With the 80 by 200 mile piece of Mississippi Delta giving us the most heavy hitters in early blues.
