What was your favorite gift you gave this year?

Gary Blanchard

beloved, local musician
For me, it would have to be the guitar case and stand I got for my niece. When I got the Blue Eclipse from Luna, I sent the Dolphin Oracle guitar to Monica; she had a much cheaper guitar she was trying to learn on. Last Christmas I got her the Luna acoustic amp. This year I went for a nice, hard-shell case. Her mother ( my sister) was the only one of my siblings who never played an instrument, so I am doing all I can to help my niece develop her artistic interests. (She got paining supplies for her birthday.)

What is the one gift you gave that means the most to you?

We got my kids new bikes through @IamSeaDevil this year. They got a lot of stuff from the extended family and we also bought them iPad minis but I'm looking forward to spending some time with the whole family out doors doing something non-electronic.

We saw a coupon for a local restaurant that offered a complete Turkey dinner with all of the fixings. We called and asked if they would deliver. They would after we explained why.
So, we bought the dinner and got it in the form of a gift certificate.
Then my wife went to our grandkids' school and asked the principal to get that certificate to a family in our community that needed it.

The restaurant was really cool. There were limitations to what went with the meal: pick this OR that. They waived all that and included everything.
They also offered soup and lasagna on their dime for any other family we could find.

The school was cool because once the idea made its way around amongst the staff, they managed to cover the same meal deals for five more families.

We did the gift certificate because that gave the recipient the option to pick it up and remain anonymous. Only the principal knows the families specifically.

She did let us know that the family that got our certificate was stunned. Both of the parents are on disability from an accident a few years ago. So, not only is money tight, the work involved in making a big meal like this is more than they can really cope with. They could do it if they could afford it, but it would take all of their energy.

I enjoyed that because not only did we help someone in need, we supported a local business. Which as it turns out, is owned by people that used to live a couple of doors down from us and across the street.

Besides that, we got the grandkids the Dash and Dot robots from www.makewonder.com. It will teach them how to program while they are having fun. The best part is that they had to leave them here for me to figure out and then teach them. Now that I've got them set up, I'm pretty sure they'll pick it up quicker than I. I'm having fun with them in the meantime though.
It looks like I need to get them a newer tablet than they have because these robots work via Bluetooth 4.0.

Because of the thread here, i got my oldest son a quadcopter. He didn't put it down all day except for recharging it.

Got the boys a wooden railway playset. And tonight I had to glue all the track down because they knock it apart every five minutes.

I think I got everybody what they wanted this year. My favorite was the Yamaha acoustic I got my oldest son. It almost matches his Yamaha 12 string. Liked it so much I got half of one for myself. My wife paid for the other half. As a side benefit, I got my Tarada Dove back from my son since he now has his own 6 string.

We gave a donation in my folks' name to a local food pantry & they gave the county SPCA a donation in our name

The NSWF gift I gave my wife, as it jump-started our own holiday festivities after the kid went to sleep.
Besides that, probably the new Skylanders game we got for Walt Junior. We convinced him he wasn't getting it, then on Christmas morning, I pulled a Christmas Story and said, "Hey, what's that present over there?"
He was pretty happy about that!

The backstory on my favorite present is that my niece had a horrible life. Her mother (my sister) was an alcoholic. Monica spent time in shelters with her mother, and in treatment programs, then watched as her mother did well for awhile until she relapsed. Just as Grace was pulling it all together again, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She passed two years ago. Through all of this, Monica has grown into a very poised and polite young lady and was blessed with a good foster family who adopted her. It amazes me that a kid can deal with what she did and come out so well. To see her playing music, painting, and acting is a testament to how the arts can heal.

We always give my mom and dad and my grandmother a photo album year book type thing. Paula does almost all of the work on it, but I get to take credit.

My mom and grandmother love it.

I built this for my (redacted).

I tracked down a lapis necklace for my wife. She saw this for sale when we were traveling in Europe a couple of years ago, and loved it, but ultimately didn't buy it. She has talked about the damn thing forever. I managed to track down the artist/jeweler who made it in northern India and get one delivered in time for Christmas. Apparently, the item is a normal production item from this designer's jewelry company and the woman who is the designer was pretty easy to find once I remembered my wife took a cell phone picture of the one she saw years back and it had a hang tag on it with the designer's name. Turns out the designer only sells in the US via National Geographic's web store and not regular jewelry stores. I managed to just order it from the designer's web page and have it shipped from India. Anyway, the wife was really surprised I managed to find it, as she looks for something like it every day when she walks past a jewelry store. It wasn't particularly expensive (just silver and cut stone) but finding it for my wife made her really, really happy.

Gave my mom a nice 3 qt saucier All Clad pan. It was on sale and figured we have a tradition of buying nice cooking ware, and in the past it's been all le creuset, so something different in the same level of quality.

My mum is a big fan of the show and I've been trying to get her into reading some different comics and graphic novels. She was really excited when she opened it and read a good 30 page right then and there. Next up, Sandman. :embarrassed:
