I was thinking about this while I was cleaning some candle wax out of my toilet bowl, who was the person who decided what spices go good with what foods, and specifically old bay, I thought maybe is it because it has bay in the name? but you wouldn't stick a bay leaf up a fish's ass and pray for rain would you? So who was it? Who specifically came up with the idea of that is the great one for fish?

For 50 plus years old bay was tossed onto steamed crabs. Never put it ion the meat when picking the crab meat. They just took a big old scoop and tossed it on top of them in the bushel basket. Suddenly that shit was on everything.

I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland as a young boy. Maryland embraced a German Jewish refugee with the perfect spice mix for crab. He was not a Baltimoron. As for the name, it came from the Old Bay Line, a famous passenger steamship line that operated in Baltimore.

Brunn was a spice merchant in Germany, arrested and imprisoned by the Nazi’s for the crime of being a Jew. His family secured his release. He escaped Germany. He settled in Baltimore and eventually opened a spice shop across from the fish market.

People say it’s the less obvious background spices used in the mix which make the Old Bay difference. Once the mix becomes part of your memory of a great crab feast, you don’t want to experiment with anything else.

Probably one of those Maryland bastards. They put that shit on everything.

I only ever ate Maryland Blue Crab with Old Bay on the shell. I love that smell eating a crab feast. You’d get the spice on your fingers, breaking open the crabs. That’s how you tasted the spice while getting at the meat. I never used Old Bay on anything else. Still, that does not prove anything.

Perhaps, most Maryland bastards do put that shit on everything. For all you know, I left Maryland for Arizona because of the overuse of Old Bay. And, maybe, I moved from AZ to CO for the Bison meat.

Stop putting down my very weird religion.

It has been said that Old Bay is made from the ground up bones of Michael Bay's grandparents.....

... in excruciating slow motion. :helper:

I’ll make fun of your religion.
Everybody knows that you have to stick your penis in the fish’s ass if you want rain. Bay leaves only bring crab fests.

Idk. Not something I associate w fish, only w seafood boils and crab things. But by the time I moved close enough to the gulf to get fresh seafood I had already developed a shellfish allergy, so what do I know? It certainly not something we use on our fried crappie or catfish around here. Ocean fish, idk, if you go to a nice seafood restaurant in Birmingham you’re likely to get some kind of Greek/ Mediterranean seasoning on it, not old bay. Not that I’m crazy about that either.
