The Porsche 906’s original 2.0-liter SOHC flat-six engine makes 207 hp, but the enlarged 2.5-liter power plant on chassis No. 906-120 now develops about 256 hp at 6,600 rpm.

While 50 examples were required to meet Group 4 homologation requirements for competition, the 906 comprised an official total of 62 cars, according to the factory. Of those, 52 were fit with the 2.0-liter flat-six engine.

I fooooooking LOOOOOOOVE this car!!! I wish my dad and I had tracked one of these down when I was a teen.... I think I could have swayed him over from hot rods to Porsche world with me. :baimun:

256 horsepower doesn't seem like much, but the car only weighs 1250 lbs., so it's plenty fast.
there are street legal versions of the 904/906 out there that people drive.
taking one of those out on the autobahn would be a hoot!!
The car itself is tiny. The tires look enormous. Before I saw my first F1 car I use to think all these cars were the size of what sits in our driveway. Power to weight ratios have to be paid attention too. Then I found it fascinating. Those dudes were racing tin cans and a motor. Huge balls.

"Porsche 906-158 is one of only four 906Es ('E' for einspritz or fuel injection) built by the factory to compete in 1967 Daytona and Sebring races in 1967 while the 910 was being developed. Modifications included double headlights, larger oil cooler and openings in the much longer nose, and the new mechanical fuel injection, transistorized ignition and several titanium suspension parts."
